Krista Elrick's Portfolio Flight
"There is some realm where feelings become birds and dark sky, and spirit is more solid than stone.
John Gardner wrote these powerful words in his short story, Redemption. His descriptive thoughts express the metaphors surrounding the fear and peace that I am exploring in the Flight portfolio."—Krista Elrick

"Impeccably sequenced, with a consistently arresting juxtaposition of full-bleed and small scale, black-and-white images, as well as generous expanses of cool white space and architectural blocks of slate-gray italic text, Avedon's first book is [famed designer] Alexey Brodovitch's summing up..."—Vince Aletti, writing in The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photography Books of the Twentieth Century

Byron Wolfe Wins 2004 Santa Fe Photo Prize
Byron Wolfe, a photographer and educator living in Chico, CA, won the 2004 Santa Fe Prize for Photography for his most recent project is Everyday: A Poetic Diary with Pictures. Roy Flukinger, this year's juror for the prize, cited Wolfe's ability to "seek out the moments that circumscribe the goal of experiencing life to its fullest. In doing so he transcends the bare subject matter and finds the universal that we all strive to find in our daily observance of fulfilling the human equation called living."
Wolfe is also a contributor to Third Views and Second Sights: A Rephotographic Survey of the American West (photo-eye catalogue MX039 and Ice Ages, Ghost Rivers, and Tree Clocks: Time and Photography in Yosemite (Trinity University Press, available Fall 2005).

Photo-Eye Booklist: 2004 Holiday Booklist Photo-Eye Booklist: 2004 Holiday Booklist
In this issue of the Booklist, Vince Aletti writes about a new book published by Fraenkel Gallery on Arbus' libraries; Alex Sweetman spends time with Martin Parr and his new history of the photobook. Both of these books, and the articles, contribute to a deeper understanding of the potentials of a photography book.

As usual you will find the Survey of New Books, in which roughly thirty new titles from across the publishing spectrum are reviewed; a second dose of editorial content in the form of articles and interviews; and advertising from a wide array of publishers and photography-related businesses.
