Photographic Memories II
Don Hong-Oai's evocative landscapes, produced from multiple negatives are idealized scenes. As such, in the tradition of Chinese landscape painting, they do not represent a specific time or place. Each sepia-toned, gelatin silver print bears a distinctive Chinese inscription by the artist. Don Hong-Oai passed away a little over a year ago, yet a limited number of these exquisite prints are still available.

Jim Krantz's portfolios Equivalents & Moonshooter
My studies can be traced back to Ansel Adams, whose workshops in the mid-70's introduced me to the work of Frederick Sommer, Henry Holmes Smith, and Wynn Bullock. In my work I am still wrestling with the issues that define the medium of photography versus those painting. Can there be a middle ground where my vision of the external world can meld with internal landscapes and emotions revealed through painted abstraction?—Jim Krantz

This project illustrates the evolution of aviation from the birthplace at the Langley Full Scale Wind Tunnel and transitioning to the aircraft's final resting place in the Arizona desert. I was interested in the place where the development of aircraft began and then what ultimately became of the machines created from this engineering genius.—Jim Krantz |

 | Writing in The Book of 101 Books, David Levi-Strauss says of this book, "These are such exquisite, transcendentally beautiful images of athletes, that one almost forgets their context." Along with Triumph of the Will, Riefenstahl's work recording the 1936 Olympics, remains one of the most crucial documents for our understanding of Nazi culture. |

photo-eye Booklist: 2005 Summer
photo-eye is pleased to announce the transformation of our quarterly Booklist into a 100% subscription-based magazine with a 4-issue price of only $20. The Booklist is handsomely designed and intelligently edited, with articles about photobook publishing, interviews with photographers and book makers, and, of course, our much anticipated survey of the best new photobooks from around the world. There is absolutely no other magazine like it.
Over a period of 25 years, the photo-eye Booklist grew from a single typewritten page in 1979, into a respected specialty book catalogue—must-reading for photobook lovers. The latest step in our evolution represents the culmination of several years of concerted editorial development, including more in-depth writing, new features of interest to collectors and photographers, and a summer 2004 re-design. We hope you enjoy our new magazine and support us in this exciting endeavor. Thank you for your help in making this publication a reality.
