"It is my hope that the viewer can find a sense of peace and self reflection in these photographs. To me they are a metaphor for the internal search for spiritual comfort and safety, and a desire to transcend the ordinary in an attempt to experience the mystical."—Kristin Satzman

Contemporary subcultures are the subject of many books and almost the sole reason for being for some publishers like powerHouse Books and Gingko Press. In this week's newsletter, we would like to present some upcoming Fall titles that represent this genre.

Where'd You get those? is a survey by sneaker afficianado Bobbito Garcia on the history of sneakers in New York City from the 60's to the 80's. Everything you ever wanted to know aboout the rise of soles. New and Used, Marc Joseph's follow up to American Pitbull, explores the world of used bookshops and record stores. Featured in Behind the Beat are the inner sanctums of some of music's most innovative music creators— DJ Premier DJ Spinna, Skitz, Nextmen, Taskforce, DJ Swamp-to name a few. Behind the Beat and Where'd You get those? are available now, and New and Used is due in September.

Adam Wallacavage shot for Thrasher and Skateboard magazine and has chronicled skateboarding culture for years. In his new monograph, Monster Size Monsters, Wallacavage presents his images of Barry McGee, Rebecca Westcott and other artists and underground bands playing in the venues such as Space 1026 in Philadelphia, PA and Fort Thunder in Providence, RI.

In Pedal, Peter Sutherland documents bike messengers competing in the 2005 Cycle Messenger World Championships in New York City. The accompaning DVD features interviews with some of NYC's finest on two wheels. The charcacters Sutherland encounters prove that one must be crazy to work this job. This is his follow up book to Autograf (2004). Lastly, Hugo Martinez, leading authority on the history of street art in NYC, and graffiti artist Nato edit a collection of over two hundred photos of artwork by some of the most prominent names of the past five years in the world of New York street art, including CASE 2, KEZ, MÖSCO, SKUF, VFR, and MQ. Graffati NYC is due in September.
