Opening this Friday: Post-Pictorialism: Photographs by Nick Brandt and Raymond Meeks
Please join us this Friday, December 1st for our Santa Fe Gallery opening of new work by photographers Nick Brandt and Raymond Meeks. The opening is from 5 to 7 pm at photo-eye Gallery, 376-A Garcia Street.
Working in the vein of the late 19th century Pictorialist movement, Nick Brandt's portraits of African wildlife have brought animal photography beyond the traditional documentation of wild life into the realm of Fine Art. New work for the show will be drawn from images produced during Brandt's recent trips to Africa.
Raymond Meeks' images emerge from his journeys to foreign lands as well as the silent meanderings into his own backyard, bringing to mind the memory of a pre-industrial landscape on the verge of being conquered. His recent color photographs of icebergs from Greenland draw reference to early color and landscape photography and the Naturalist movement of the 1880's. Black-and-white photographs documenting Burmese salt mine workers from his upcoming book A Clearing (Nazraeli Press, 2007) will also be on display.

Quiet Life - The Village of South Africa
"The Transkai in South Africa is a desolate landscape which stretches as far as the eye can see. It is a different image of Africa than what you would expect.
Many Xhosa people live in arid areas (which they call home land) as a result of the Apartheid regime. During this time Native Africans were forced to live within a designated 13 percent of the country, the majority of which is arid.
One Xhosa village in this homeland is 'Cacadu,' located in a hilly district
twelve hours by car from Johannesburg.
In this area there is little rain. The land is dry and sterile. It is difficult to farm the land there, so most young people and fathers leave the village to find work.
