Andrew Sovjani's portfolio Folding Light
"My photography has always been about the study of light and its nuances. Its qualities are always changing, as we move from daybreak to sunset, pass through the seasons or as we travel to different parts of the world. I wanted to find a subject that would allow me to study light directly without the subject matter 'getting in the way.' I chose plain, ubiquitous white paper as my subject.

I started with a basic understanding that when surfaces receive light, the light effects vary depending on the angle of exposure. So I began to fold, curl and alter the paper and observe these forms under different lighting conditions. I began to play with arranging the folds and curls into groupings until relationships began to form between their lines, shapes and shadows. At some magical point, the elements of the composition and the quality of light come together to transform the subject into something more than paper."

William Eggleston: C-print from Faulkner's Mississippi William Eggleston: C-print from Faulkner's Mississippi
This image appears on page twenty-five of Faulkner's Mississippi, published in 1990. In the book, Eggleston's photographs appear opposite poetic evocations of Oxford's most famous resident by famed writer and fellow southerner Willie Morris. Writer and photographer come together to bring 'modern effect to Faulkner's Mississippi—both the Mississippi of his fiction and the Mississippi of his fiction.'—from the jacket copy As preparatory 'studies' for larger dye-transfer prints, these C-prints are an important part of Eggleston's working process.

"New and Used is a collection of richly detailed color photographs of hardcovers, paperbacks, LPs, CDs and cassettes, either shelved, piled, boxed and stacked in their increasingly endangered natural environments — independent book and record shops — or individually silhouetted like artifacts pinned into shadow-boxes."—the publisher READ MORE

Kahn & Selesnick: The Apollo Prophecies Kahn & Selesnick: The Apollo Prophecies
"The Apollo Prophecies depicts, in one extravagantly long tritone panorama, an imagined expedition of 1960s American astronauts who land on the moon and discover a lost mission of Edwardian-era astronauts who greet them as long-awaited gods. These wildly inventive staged photographs, evidence of events that never happened, playfully question the role of photography in our sense of historical truth. Equal parts Jules Verne and Stanley Kubrick, with a touch of William Blake, the panoramic moonscape literally unfolds in multiple episodes that intermingle artifacts from the fearless era of early-twentieth-century exploration with space-age gadgetry."—the publisher READ MORE

"Fraser himself has described his pictures of static, seemingly mundane objects as "trying to understand what the world around me is made of." Philip Trager: Philip Trager Philip Trager
"This overview offers readers full access to one of the twentieth century's most important photographers of architecture and dance, combining work from his previous monographs with unpublished photographs from a wide range of projects. His distinctly personal images of buildings are regarded as landmark works in architectural photography, and have become standard documents for architectural and art historians, as well as architects. His expressionistic photographs of dancers in outdoor settings capture the essence of the work of many of the best contemporary choreographers, and have reinvigorated the field of dance photography."—the publisher READ MORE

Hiroshi Sugimoto: Joe Hiroshi Sugimoto: Joe
"While it may not be known to us how the much-honored conceptual photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto and best-selling experimental writer Jonathan Safran Foer were paired up (Manhattan cocktail party? Mutual acquaintance? Mutual interest in illumination?), it turns out to be a puzzlingly effective combination. ... The result may be a trifle abstract for a general readership, but neither Sugimoto nor Foer seems to be too worried about throwing the audience. Joe probably isn't everyone's cup of chai, but for fans, it will have all the charms of a contemporary dervish dance...." Reviewed by Phil Harris. READ MORE

Will Straw: Cyanide and Sin Will Straw: Cyanide and Sin
"Though there has been a rehabilitation of just about every imaginable genre of pulp/lowbrow culture over the past three decades, no one has really tackled the hermetic world of true-crime magazines, until now. Will Straw's book is, thankfully, visual candy, but it packs a lingering burn too. While its museum-store-worthy design makes it obvious that it's a serious book (one that you don't have to hide before your mother drops by), it's really an act of analysis and an act of homage at one and the same time...."
