Joni Sternbach's portfolio Ditch Plains
"Their avocation takes place right on the water; they are constant elements in a shifting scene. My approach is a simple one: introductions are made, and each person willing to collaborate steps out into the water and poses. The sea acts as both a backdrop and a watery stage. As the tide recedes the rocky surface underneath is revealed, looking more like the moon than the beach."—Joni Sternbach

Just as every photographer aspires to publish a book that will be sought after by collectors so too every serious collector would love their own library to be the envy of other photobook aficionados. Several books, such as Andrew Roth's Book of 101 Books, the Hasselblad Center and ICP's The Open Book, and Fotografía Pública: Photography in Print 1919-1939 have cataloged some of the best photography books yet printed, and this year brought a new crop of books about books. Stephen Daiter, Jess Mott, and photographer John Gossage collaborated to create the catalogue From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Books That Matter. Meanwhile, Phaidon published the second volume of The Photobook: A History, Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's list of "not just great photobooks of the past, but [also the] potentially great photobooks of the future."
In From Fair to Fine, Gossage makes a statement about Japanese photobooks that could be applied to others great books of photography: "Seeing them was like seeing a strange and beautiful bird flying by. You caught a glimpse but could not really describe what you had seen when asked...but you always remembered."

Collier Schorr: Forest and Fields
"The American photographer Collier Schorr has been working on and off in
Southern Germany for the past 12 years, compiling a documentary and
fictional portrait of a small town inhabited by historical apparitions. For
Schorr, the German landscape is a map of her own history, both imagined
and inherited. Combining the overlapping roles of war photographer,
traveling portraitist, anthropologist and family historian, in this series,
entitled Forest and Fields, Schorr tells the interwoven stories of a place
and time determined by memory, nationalism, war, emigration and family."—the publisher
Schorr's earlier book, Jens F., explores gender and identity through a six-year portrait series of a German teenage boy. READ MORE

Graciela Iturbide: Eyes to Fly With
"Graciela Iturbide has found her inner theme photographing the Zapotec women of Juchitan and the Mixtec goat butchers of Oaxaca, in the company of Nobel laureates and world-renowned artists, among mourners at Mexican cemeteries and Indian death houses. Each image stands on its artistic own, but each also tells something about the fascinating artist who made it. In Eyes to Fly With, which includes both iconic images and previously unpublished work, Graciela Iturbide has assembled both a retrospective of her career and an introspective self-portrait—in short, an artist's art book."

Joel Meyerowitz: Aftermath
"Meyerowitz was the only photographer allowed down on 'the pile' as it came to be known, alongside the police officers and firemen, the steelworkers and rescue teams, amid the smoke-belching maws of twisted girders. He spent nine months photographing this unique urban inferno with an 8×10 Dear-dorff camera, wielding this large-format apparatus like a 35mm SLR. Fully conscious of making a record, he writes: '9/11 had awakened in me a profound need to give something back...Bearing witness week after week reminded me why I had become a photographer....'" —Reviewed by Mark Hillringhouse.

Marco Van Duyvendijk: Mongolia
"A young girl sits on a bed, quietly reading a book. Her head is bent in concentration, elbows tucked in at the waist, hair pulled back into a ponytail, small feet planted sedately on the linoleum floor. Her slight form occupies just a fraction of the space of this photograph, which is otherwise filled with drying laundry, a red hanger, a soup canteen and the sort of sundry artifacts of everyday life that indicate she is not in Europe or America. This scene of quaint domesticity seems like a rather ordinary cover image for a book so grandly titled Mongolia. In fact, this unassuming image perfectly introduces Marco van Duyvendijk's approach of using the subtleties and details of everyday existence to create a portrait of the country's people...."—Reviewed by Hannah Newburn.
