Just as every photographer aspires to publish a book that will be sought after by collectors so too every serious collector would love their own library to be the envy of other photobook aficionados. Several books, such as Andrew Roth's Book of 101 Books, the Hasselblad Center and ICP's The Open Book, and Fotografía Pública: Photography in Print 1919-1939 have cataloged some of the best photography books yet printed, and this year brought a new crop of books about books. Stephen Daiter, Jess Mott, and photographer John Gossage collaborated to create the catalogue From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Books That Matter. Meanwhile, Phaidon published the second volume of The Photobook: A History, Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's list of "not just great photobooks of the past, but [also the] potentially great photobooks of the future."
In From Fair to Fine, Gossage makes a statement about Japanese photobooks that could be applied to others great books of photography: "Seeing them was like seeing a strange and beautiful bird flying by. You caught a glimpse but could not really describe what you had seen when asked...but you always remembered."

Joel Meyerowitz: Aftermath

Marco Van Duyvendijk: Mongolia
"A young girl sits on a bed, quietly reading a book. Her head is bent in concentration, elbows tucked in at the waist, hair pulled back into a ponytail, small feet planted sedately on the linoleum floor. Her slight form occupies just a fraction of the space of this photograph, which is otherwise filled with drying laundry, a red hanger, a soup canteen and the sort of sundry artifacts of everyday life that indicate she is not in Europe or America. This scene of quaint domesticity seems like a rather ordinary cover image for a book so grandly titled Mongolia.
