Tom Chambers and Hiroshi Watanabe opening on July 13, 2007, 5-7 pm
photo-eye Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of our summer show, Tom Chambers and Hiroshi Watanabe. This opening coincides with the opening night of the PhotoArts Santa Fe Biennial Photography Festival.

We are excited to show Hiroshi Watanabe's new color work from North Korea, as well as a selection of black and white images from all over the world. Though the locales are quite different, there is a consistent romantic vision that runs deeply throughout his photographs. His pictures are stunningly beautiful and reflect his desire to capture the essence of people and places.

Tom Chambers creates fantastic, imagined scenes to reveal his personal vision about the nature of and interactions between children and animals. These images illustrate the fleeting moments of childhood that can't normally be captured by a traditional camera or seen by the naked eye.

Both artists will be attending the Artist Reception on Friday, July 13th from 5-7 PM at our Santa Fe Gallery (376 Garcia Street, Santa Fe, NM 87501). The closing date of this show will be September 8, 2007.

View all books by Hiroshi Watanabe.

Also on display, works by Julie Blackmon and Kerry Skarbakka.

For more information about this exhibit, please email Anne Kelly or Heather Prichard.

Photography community loses two extraordinary people: John Szarkowski and Bernd Becher

Two legends of Contemporary photography passed on recently.

On Saturday, July 7th, photographer, curator, and writer John Szarkowski passed away. Szarkowski is best known for his tenure as director of the Photography Department at MoMA presenting the works of William Eggleston, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, and the exhibition New Documents introducing the work of Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand, and Lee Friedlander. He also contributed some essential reading to the world of photograhic book with Looking at Photographs, The Photographer's Eye, William Eggleston's Guide, and The Work of Atget.
Read his obituary by Mark Haworth-Booth in The Guardian.

Bernd Becher died at the end of June after heart surgery. He is best known for his work of typological studies with his wife, Hilla Becher and his educational career at the Dusseldorf school. During his time there, he and his wife taught Andreas Gursky, Candida Hofer, Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff, and many others.

Books arriving soon! Pre-order signed copies now!

"...It is fascinating...how two independently composed works can synchronistically come together to create a whole new unique piece. Such is the case with Solutions Beginning with A. Most of Maggie Taylor's striking montages and Lola Haskins' ethereal stories were created separately and have found each other here in this book; perhaps, as some kind of preordained 'solution.'"...—excerpt from Shawn Colvin's introduction to the book READ MORE

"Mark Klett has been photographing the deserts of the American West, in particular the beauties of the Sonoran landscape-a desert that sprawls across southern Arizona and northern Mexico. Along with coyotes and tumbleweeds, saguaro cacti are one of the most recognizable (and stereotypical) features of this region. This beautifully produced volume, featuring 40 deluxe tritone images, presents a selection of Klett's most evocative portraits with an essay by acclaimed writer Gregory McNamee."—the publisher READ MORE

Alvin Booth: Osmosis Alvin Booth: Osmosis

"Osmosis is a departure from Booth's earlier work. Uncomfortably constrained by conventional photography paper formats, Booth created his own paper, long and narrow, the ideal complement for his attenuated and fragile figures. The elongation of the original prints, the prefect accommodation for his filiform figures, is suggested here in the oversize format of the book. "—the publisher READ MORE
