photo-eye Gallery Picture of the Week
photo-eye introduces a new section of our newsletter wherein a photo-eye staffer picks one of their favorite pictures from the wealth of imagery on our website. This week, Melanie McWhorter, Book Division Manager, has chosen Raymond Meeks' August 24, 2006 2:14 p.m. Greenland.
"There is a rich mythology associated with crows and ravens present in many cultures around the world. I tend to personally identify these black birds as harbingers of good omens and positive symbols. I also have a mild obsession with them. Raymond Meeks appears to share this obsession. Like many other Meeks images of crows—Crow, fence Montana 2001, August 29, 2006 7:25a.m. (greenland), and August 29, 2006 7:52 a.m.— this photographs strength lies in the compositional play and symbolic use of black and white tones, as well as the theme of the indirect interaction between man and nature."—Melanie McWhorter

| Carlo Mollino: Polaroids Acclaimed as one of the most original artists in mid-century Italian architecture and design, Mollino was also a secret photographer. He photographed women in erotically charged poses, obsessively controlling everything from the setting-which would often include furniture he had designed-to the lingerie they wore. Before this book, only a handful of his Polaroids had ever been seen publicly. This gorgeous monograph, bound in a deep red cloth, reproduces over 250 examples of Mollino's work.
Once remaindered, now quite scarce. |

Fazal Sheikh: Moksha—Signed
Signed copies arriving in September, preorder now.
"Sheikh combines portraits, testimonials, cultural
details and history to present a holistic view of the
women of Vrindavan. The mood and spirituality of this
holy city permeate the pages with his soft-focus and
fog-saturated black-and-white images. The ritual of turning
each page, looking at each portrait, reading each personal
history, is meditative."—the publisher READ MORE

Fazal Sheikh: Ladli—Signed
Signed copies arriving in September, preorder now.
"In India it costs a poor family 50 rupees to hire a midwife to oversee the birth of a child. For an additional 10 rupees, the parents are assured that the birth of a girl will be met with an act of infanticide by the midwife. The alternative for many is an institution like the Delhi orphanage, in which Fazal Sheikh's work on the predicament of the girl-child in India begins-and 99 percent of that orphanage's population are girls."—the publisher READ MORE

Ed Panar: Golden Palms—Signed
Signed copies arriving in about three weeks.
"When Ed Panar moved to Los Angeles, he opted not to get a car. Or a high-end camera. For two years. His compact was, 'quick, cheap and direct, and that seemed to suit L.A.' The color photographs collected in Golden Palms reflect Panar's walking life there, with the cumulative effect of a subtly funny tour through the city's lost back streets-parts of contemporary Los Angeles that most people would simply speed past in their cars."—the publisher READ MORE

Taryn Simon: An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar—Signed
More signed copies arriving in two weeks.
"Transforming that which is off-limits or under-the-radar into a visible and intelligible form, she confronts the divide between the privileged access of the few and the limited access of the public. Photographed with a large format view camera (except when prohibited), Simon's 70 color plates form a seductive collection that reflects and reveals a national identity."—the publisher READ MORE

Eadweard Muybridge: The Man Who Stopped Time
"...it is his personal life that possesses all the ingredients of a classic non-fiction best-seller: a passionately driven man struggling against the odds; dire treachery and shocking betrayal; a cast of larger-than-life characters set against a backdrop of San Francisco and the Far West in its most turbulent and dangerous era; a profusion of scientific and artistic advances and discoveries, one hotly following on another; the nervous intensity of two spectacular courtroom dramas (one pitting Muybridge against the richest man in the land and staring ruin in the face, the other sees him fighting for his life). And for the opening act, a foul murder on a dark and stormy night.
