Mihai Mangiulea
Mihai Mangiulea
Our Online Gallery Coordinator, Sarah Bradley, has choosen Mihai Mangiulea's Past as her staff pick for the week.

"I see traces of hidden narratives in Mihai Mangiulea's Edges/Lisires. They are stunning images, luminous and soft, colors vibrant as if hand-tinted, yet also dark with an almost peculiar depth — but what keeps me peering into those woods are the tales whispered on the edge of the mind. I can imagine this to be the forest of Hansel and Gretel or Red Riding Hood, forests where something else, something unknown, lurks. The sensation is like getting spooked, when I am suddenly forced to consider if somewhere past the edge of my consciousness I might still believe in monsters and ghosts. What falls beyond the tree line are more trees, but Mangiulea's images remind me that this is not a certainty, only what we have learned to expect."—Sarah Bradley

Ryoji Akiyama: New York Reports Ryoji Akiyama: New York Reports
While the influences of William Klein, Robert Frank, and Ed Van Der Elsken are pervasive in Japanese photography of the post-war period, a somewhat younger generation of photographers has, not surprisingly, looked to the likes of Shore and Eggleston. Ryoji Akiyama is among the most important of these (Takeshi Homma and Masafumi Sanai are others). Akiyama's pictures strike a wonderful balance between spontanaeity and careful composition. As such they can also be compared to the likes of Levitt, Winogrand, and Friedlander. A fantastic book!!

"In some countries, they call them the abandoned ones. They're the impoverished mentally ill and mentally disabled patients being warehoused in psychiatric asylums that are more run-down, more uncaring than the most brutal American prisons. Confined in cage-like cells, tied to beds soiled with human waste, medicated to the point of senselessness, or wandering naked in unheated and garage-like wards, they live in what can only be called the shadows..."—the publisher READ MORE
