The work I exhibit gives me a huge sense of accomplishment and fulfillment, put simply 'This is exactly what I should be doing.'
Upon finding a suitable location I will often wait days, weeks, even months and years for improvements in the available light, taking into account calculations of the various trajectories of the sun as the earth orbits throughout the seasons as well as the lunar tidal rhythm.
This purposeful approach can result in planning shoots years in advance. Through my images, I seek to convey the beauty of our rich and diverse natural environment; I am forever humbled by the forces that have made it so and its contrast to the frailty of human existence and just how much we are taking for granted.

This week's pick is by photo-eye's Book Division Manager Melanie McWhorter. She has selected Mark Eshbaugh's Nude #4, 1998
I selected this photograph for its implied emotional state, more that the descriptive content. The female figure is naked, but guarded: somewhat like the way I feel today. — Melanie McWhorter

| Andreas Magdanz: Dienststelle Marienthal (SIGNED!) "[Magdanz's photos] are like a glimpse of Strangelove's demented vision of a nuclear sanctuary translated into historical truth...The Dienstelle Marienthal (or Marienthal Office) is among the most ambitious but least-known monuments to "thinking the unthinkable" ever conceived... [Magdanz] was the first person authorized to photograph there...His photographic tour of the forbidden city—he shot more than 1,000 negatives in both black and white and color with a large-format camera, and also made a videotape—is not comforting...Monotony, regimentation and claustrophobic dread are the outstanding qualities found in the pictures."— excerpts from Richard B. Woodward, "Pictures at the Hotel Armageddon", NY Times, January 11, 2004
Currently on the block and available in post-auction sales are a trove of books by Ed Ruscha, including Various Small Fires and Milk; Records; Crackers, and others. |

Ed Kashi: Three
Copies arriving in 1-2 weeks.
"In a world inundated by visual imagery, our ability to take in more than one image at a time has become innate. In fact, our attention span demands it. Three, a book of triptychs by acclaimed photographer Ed Kashi, plays on the visual appetite of a hectic world. These triptychs span eras and continents, challenging our notions of perspective and the individual image. Contained in a format dating back to Christian art in the Middle Ages, Kashi's images examine current issues of social and political significance, bringing together the joy, sorrow, destruction, and reconstruction of a world in flux. These triptychs compel us to see the relationships between extreme ends of the human experience and to appreciate the strange beauty inherent in that experience."—the publisher READ MORE

John Stezaker: Fumetti
Copies arriving in 2-4 weeks.
"In the Fumetti series Stezaker continues his work with publicity film portraits. Instead of working with old bromides, however, he takes portraits from film annuals of the 1950s and 1960s and deconstructs perfect hair and makeup to make monstrous hybrids. Fumetti is an Italian comic tradition using photos instead of illustrations."—the publisher READ MORE
