DAVID TRAUTRIMAS' FIRST SOLO U.S. EXHIBITION
Artist Reception Friday, July 10, 2009 5-7PM
Exhibition July 10 - September 12, 2009
photo-eye Gallery is pleased to announce Habitat Machines, photographs by David Trautrimas. David will be present for the reception on Friday, July 10, 2009 from 5-7PM.
"With their industrial steampunk aesthetic, and looming, animated postures, David Trautrimas' machines would fit nicely into the sets of Terry Gilliam's clanking dystopia 'Brazil.' Or perhaps post-crash Dubai."—Penelope Green, New York Times, 2009 on the work of David Trautrimas

Tim Simmons's portfolio Intervention
Tim Simmons's work occupies a particular and unique dimension. His meticulously crafted landscape images sculpted with artificial light disrupt the optic senses, placing the viewer uneasily within a unique photographic vision inspiring narratives from mythology to science fiction. Contrary to much contemporary landscape photography concerned with 'non-places' and the aftermath, the sublime and the dramatic take centre-stage here. Simmons's unsettling representation of these terrains is a poignant contribution to the discourse upon the notion of the 'natural' and 'untamed' landscape.

| Robert Frank: The Americans (Inscribed Association Copy with Hand Drawing) A fascinating association copy!! The inscription on this copy of The Americans is intriguing historically, as it contains the tag-line "Lines of My Hand," which, of course, went on to become the title of one of Frank's major books. Yet the inscription is dated '71, the year before Frank's book was published (in a deluxe edition by the Japanese publisher Kazuhiko Motomura and in the U.S. by Ralph Gibson's Lustrum press). Mauro Fiorese & Keith Carter: Dream of a Place of Dreams - SIGNED by Mauro Fiorese
Copies arriving in 2-4 weeks.
"It is clear the authors mutually respect each other, as well as the history and popular culture of Monaco but the real surprise in this collaborative view of Monaco is the unsentimental view of the Principality's rich cultural heritage and claims to fame.
Working often with shallow photographic focus, Carter and Fiorese call attention to the often overlooked and pedestrian, the ordinary unsung details that help define both a city and a culture."—the publisher

Sakiko Nomura: Kuroyami
Copies arriving in 4-8 weeks.
"Kuroyami when translated means "black darkness" and this theme is prevalent
throughout the course of the subject matter presented in this volume. An assistant to
Araki for a number of years, Sakiko Nomura's work shares some similarities yet is not
as immediately provocative. Sometimes diffused and grainy, the photographs capture
people — vulnerable and exposed through (in) direct and filtered light sources. Dark
and brooding, the photographs are presented one image per-page in large folio
format."—the publisher READ MORE

Javier Ayarza: Terra
Copies arriving in 4-8 weeks.
"Over a period of fifteen years, the work of Javier Ayarza has gradually defined itself
as a constant investigation of the medium of photography and its unique possibility to
construct a subtle and historical gaze on the world. This publication brings together
two different works: 'La siesta del fauno' — an open project that began in 2000 in the
region Castilla y León — and that focuses on territories of failure and abandonment;
and 'La estrategia del avestruz,'also a work in progress, that focuses on the process
of recovering the historical memory in relation to the Spanish Civil War and the
repression carried out by the Franco regime."—the publisher READ MORE

Jill Hartley: Lotería Fotográfica Mexicana
Copies arriving in 2-4 weeks.
"Lottery has quite an ancient history; the texts of this small book tell us about it, how to play it and other entertaining games of chance. And, as in the typical lotteries of days gone by, this one is called by reading a traditional saying, proverb or legend printed on the reverse which reflects the idiosyncrasy of Mexico, artistically captured by the lens of Jill Hartley. Over almost ten years, she made several trips to Mexico, in order to understand and photograph its daily universe: its landscapes, people, customs... This is why, A Lottery of Mexican Photographs is not only a game, but also a lesson in ethnography and art.
This boxed version includes a softcover copy of the book plus 10 boards and 54 cards to play."—the publisher

"Beautifully produced to include a selection of family photographs from the artist's childhood and ancestry alongside generous documentation of her recent concurrent one-person exhibitions in Krefeld, Germany and Nuremberg, this volume sheds new light on one of the most influential American artists of her generation.... With excursions into Christian iconography and the history of the American postcolonial era, she speaks also to the archetype of the inspired female creator or artist."?the publisher READ MORE

Jeff Wall: The Complete Edition
Copies due in November.
"Jeff Wall (b.1946) adopts the nineteenth-century poet Baudelaire's famous description of one of his contemporaries as 'a painter of modern life' to describe his own very different work: huge transparencies mounted on to light boxes that diffuse a brilliant glow of white light evenly through his photographs of contemporary urban scenes and 'constructed' social situations.
The survey by Thierry de Duve, author of 'Pictorial Nominalism' and 'The Definitively Unfinished Marcel Duchamp', proposes an alternative history of modernism. Critic and curator Arielle Pelenc talks with the artist on themes ranging from storytelling to cinematography. Boris Groys, author of 'Contemporary Art from Moscow', focuses on the meaning of light in Wall's work. The update section by French art critic and historian of photograpy Jean-Francois Chevrier surveys Wall's work from 1995 to the present. The artist has chosen texts by Blasie Pascal and Franz Kafka for the 'Artist's Choice', and the 'Artist's Writings' celebrate Wall as an art historian and theorist by including key essays and important interviews."—the publisher
