New Portfolio by David Trautrimas Spyfrost
"Balanced between the promised utopian culture of leisure, facilitated by what the latest in modern manufacturing had to offer and the threat of a global catastrophe wrought by ICBMs, supersonic jet fighters, and spy satellites, this series elicits the tense equilibrium between the extremes of design and technology during the Cold War era." — David Trautrimas

photo-eye Magazine Reviews

This week in photo-eye Magazine:
IN THE REVIEWS:
"Violet Isle was launched at the opening of an exhibition of the photographs at Ricco Maresca Gallery in Manhattan in November. But the contrast between the photographs on display (now on the gallery website) and the photographs appearing in this book is shocking, because most of the photographs are insistently "guttered." This aggressive design usually strikes me as designer-ego gone astray, a designer who wants to be co-creator with the author. But I notice the poster mailed out announcing the show also reflected a total reformatting of some of the photos in the show, and I really liked that. So, after about a month, after my loathing of the design subsided and the book flattened easily with no signs of damage, I spent more and more time with the book and embrace it now as bookwork, photobookwork, production, not merely reproduction. As such it is the wonderful collaboration between two quite different but related photographers, and Radius."—from Alex Sweetman's review of Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb's Violet Isle

Richard Misrach: On the Beach
"These stunning images made in Hawaii over a three-year period were Richard Misrach's artistic response to 9/11. While watching that tragedy unfold, Misrach was struck by the scale of the tiny figures he saw falling to the ground—office workers who had jumped to their deaths, escaping the encroaching fire. The enormity of it all was profound and it inspired the idea for this large-scale work, where diminutive figures seem so vulnerable in their relationship to the immensity of the ocean. We are reminded throughout this book that humans hold court as tiny specks on our planet and that our significance in the larger realm of things is extremely short-lived at best."— Rixon Reed, Director, photo-eye
Richard Misrach's monumental book On The Beach sold out shortly after publication. We still have a few copies left, as new in the original publisher's shipping box, available for sale at a special price, found elsewhere selling for $350 or more. Please note, that because of the trials and tribulations of the printing and binding process for such large-sized sheets, some of the pages may have minor imperfections such as dimples and crescent indentations, common to this book. Also note, this is a limited time offer at this special price. READ MORE

Ron Jude: Other Nature—Signed
"Other Nature, Ron Jude's newest book, is a complex exploration of this duality-the particular combination of qualities belonging to a person (the interior self) and to the material world surrounding us (the exterior self). By juxtaposing landscapes with hotel rooms Jude manifests an uncomfortable sense of 'other,' something that many may encounter, but few are familiar. Many of the exterior images have an unusual foreign objects involuntarily 'placed' by nature or human beings, showing a presence that was. Showing that time was before and time will be after..." - from Melanie McWhorter's review of Other Nature in Fraction Magazine.

| An early catalogue by Struth, who has gone on to be one of the central figures of the Düsseldorf School.
"You know it's amazing, [the Bechers] love is really for...how can I say it?...an understanding of historical contexts in the most profound manner...it's like advertising for historical awareness, in a way. If that sounds too dry, we can also think of it as a passion for the dynamics of human existence, which I definitely share."—Thomas Struth, in an interview with Gil Blank, in Whitewall Magazine, Volume 6, 2007 and republished in the blog AmericanSuburbX |
