Larry Louie's portfolio Tibetans: The Struggle for Cultural Preservation
"I am constantly amazed by the ethnic and cultural diversity I see in our world on my travels: from our gender to our skin colors to our race and our religion, and the differences in our languages, beliefs, and customs. Increasingly, I feel an urgency to document people in areas of the world threatened by urbanization and globalization - places where traditional ways of life, ancient knowledge and customs, languages and identities are disappearing at an alarming rate. People often talk about endangered species and the loss of biodiversity in nature. Some are beginning to notice the threat to the diversity of cultures. The changes brought on by rapid industrialization and urbanization affect not only animal and plant species - societies that have been around for thousands of years are also at risk."— Larry Louie

photo-eye Magazine Reviews

This week in photo-eye Magazine:
IN THE REVIEWS:
When a dream machine goes into overdrive, what happens to its dross? What forms do a community's dreams take? Can the overflow be incorporated into everyday life? Dreams have only passing relationships to rational daily life, but dreams can also be manufactured in very intentional ways. Pieter Hugo addresses these dream issues by photographing elements of the machine that has grown up in Nigeria, the movie capital considered the third -wood after Holly and Bolly. This week in photo-eye Magazine:
IN THE REVIEWS:
Paula McCartney has been making unique and limited edition artist books for many years. She sees the book as a medium and visualizes much of her photographic work in book form, many of her photographs exist only in the artist book. McCartney's first trade edition, published by Princeton Architectural Press, will be welcomed by individual collectors interested in McCartney's work, as it is both affordable in comparison to her artist books and beautiful." —from Larissa Leclair's review of Paula McCartney's Bird Watching
