| Kikuji Kawada: Sacré Atavism (SIGNED) A very scarce signature on an extraordinary book! This astounding volume is equal parts Gothic and psychedelic: Most of the images take architectural sculpture as their subject...It is divided into six chapters: "parco dei mostri;" "grotesque garden;" "the fantastic castle;" "microcosmos;" "the hell" and "wax man in town." All explore notions of the grotesque. Full of vertiginous compositions and grainy, high contrast tonality, these moody and atmospheric photos render even familiar scenes intensely strange...Kawada has cited the Art Brut of Jean Dubuffet as an influence. "I seek for the analogical power and the enlargement of consciousness in photography," he once said. "I seek for the analogical power and the enlargement of consciousness in photography." |

photo-eye Book Reviews

|
 from the book Earth Now
|
Earth Now Edited by Katherine Ware" Earth Now: American Photographer and the Environment is the companion book to the New Mexico Museum of Art's upcoming exhibition of the same name. At 188 pages, it has 25 duotone and 66 color plates, with a two-part essay by museum curator Katherine Ware. The essay is the heart of the book, as it provides context for the exhibition and the included images. It's informative and easy to read, two qualities that don't always go together in museum publications." — from the review by David Ondrik of Earth Now edited by Katherine Ware

 from the book Descendants
|
Descendants by Norman Mauskopf"How many books have only a black and white photograph on the front cover with no text overlay to introduce the contents? On the slender black spine is one word: Descendants, followed by the photographer's name: Norman Mauskopf, and on the bottom edge prances the proud white horse — the publisher's instantly recognizable logo. The sequencing of the images in this book by Jack Woody, editor of TwelveTrees Press, is a work of art in and of itself — there are no words or captions to distract from the haunting images that build a visual narrative interlaced like beads on a rosary." — from the review by Mary Anne Redding of Norman Mauskopf's Descendents

Darius D. Himes & Mary Virginia Swanson: Publish Your Photography Book—Signed
"We live in the golden age of the photography book. Since the early 1990s, the number of photography book publishers has continued to grow while technological developments have placed more tools for bookmaking directly in the hands of photographers. For the students and working artists who have chosen photography as their primary means of expression, having their own photography book is seen as a passport to the international photography scene." — the publisher READ MORE
