Interviews: Michael Levin on Continuum
"Sitting in the gallery surrounded by Michael Levin's photographs, I feel a sense of calm. Though the images are still frames I perceive a sense of movement. There is something about Levin's images that inspire a sense of 'being' in the moment — and it is a peaceful and pleasant moment. After speaking with Levin and discovering a little more about the work I learned that when he sets out to photograph he is not seeking a specific location — rather he is on a journey and is waiting for a place or moment to speak to him." — Anne Kelly

Josef Koudelka: Koudelka
"Aperture's new edition of Koudelka: Gypsies rekindles the energy and astonishment of this foundational body of work by master photographer Josef Koudelka. Lavishly printed in a unique quadratone mix by artisanal printer Gerhard Steidl, it offers an expanded look at Cikáni (Czech for 'gypsies') 109 photographs of Roma society taken between 1962 and 1971 in then-Czechoslovakia (Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia), Romania, Hungary, France and Spain. The design and edit for this volume revisits the artist's original intention for the work, and is based on a maquette originally prepared in 1968 by Koudelka and graphic designer Milan Kopriva." — the publisher

photo-eye Book Reviews

 from the book Oculus
|
Oculus by Ken Schles
"Blurring the boundaries between a philosophical essay and photobook, Ken Schles' new book Oculus is a beautiful meditation on the role of images, memory and perception in our lives. In many ways, Schles' work builds upon the questions and concerns of his last two books." — Adam Bell from the review of Oculus by Ken Schles

from the book Places, Strange and Quiet
|
Places, Strange and Quiet by Wim Wenders
" Places, Strange and Quiet is a visual diary of journeys taken throughout Europe, Japan and North America by the German filmmaker Wim Wenders. The locations are possibly discovered through reconnaissance for potential film locations and may act as a way of consolidating Wenders' distinctive cinematic vision. Within the book there are nine panoramic fold out panels that emphasis the cinematic undertones of the collection." — John Mathews from the review of Places, Strange and Quiet by Wim Wenders

Rinko Kawauchi: Illuminance
"And now,
ten years after her precipitous entry onto the international
stage, Aperture has published Illuminance, the latest volume of
Kawauchi's work and the first to be published outside of Japan.
Kawauchi's photography has frequently been lauded for its
nuanced palette and offhand compositional mastery, as well as
its ability to incite wonder via careful attention to tiny gestures
and the incidental details of her everyday environment." — the publisher
