Lisa Wiltse's portfolio Mennonites of Manitoba, Bolivia "Roughly 150 kilometers northeast of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, the Manitoba colony's 2,000 residents maintain the lifestyle of their Dutch ancestors, who established the first Mennonite settlement in Russia in 1789. Since then, Old Colony Mennonites have moved throughout the New World in search of arable land and cultural sovereignty: first to Manitoba in the late 19th century, then to Mexico in the mid-1920s, after Canada required their children to attend government-approved schools." — Lisa Wiltse

photo-eye Gallery Santa Fe - New Work
|
|
 © Michael Levin
|
We are pleased to announce a new image from Michael Levin titled Morning Fog. We asked Levin to tell us a bit more about the print:
"I actually took that image Morning Fog back in 2007 somewhere in France....I think. I can't really remember where it was as I never know exactly where I am on these trips. When I developed the film I liked the negative so I did a straight print from it and it lived on my walls for 4 years. Last week I was looking at it and I finally said "aha, now I see it!" So, I spent about 30 hours working on it pulling out what I knew it could be and I just finished it." — Michael Levin
Levin's exhibit Continuum currently on display at photo-eye Gallery in Santa Fe has been extending through February 18th, so there's still time to catch the show if you haven't yet been able to see it. It's also a chance to see the very last print in the edition of Levin's iconic image Infinity, which is bound to sell out soon.
For more information on the last print of Infinity or any of Levin's other work, please email Anne Kelly or call the gallery at 505-988-5152 x202.

More Cooning with Cooners edited by Kalev Erickson
"As a British citizen, I have to confess I didn't know much about 'coon hunting before I opened this book. Now having closed it, I'm not sure how much better informed I am. This is simultaneously the most confusing and the most beguiling thing about this book. It is not an obscure, difficult or even unfocussed publication — More Cooning With Cooners is as much about raccoons, and the hunting thereof, as a sixty-page photobook can be." —Faye Robson from the review of More Cooning with Cooners edited by Kalev Erickson

The Significant Savages by Grégoire Pujade-Lauraine
"As more and more of our lives are lived online, the spaces and networks within which we communicate and express ourselves become critical stages and playgrounds for the formation and construction of our identities. Facebook and other such social networks are not merely places where we connect with friends and family, but they are spaces where we make public our imagined and real selves. Grégoire Pujade-Lauraine's new book, The Significant Savages, is an encyclopedic collection of profile pictures or avatars that offers a nuanced perspective into the clichés and hopes of our online selves.." — Adam Bell from the review of The Significant Savages by Grégoire Pujade-Lauraine

A Closer Look — Haiiro
"The photo-eye Best Book lists from 2010 and 2011 both featured books by Karianne Bueno. In Asper, selected by Alexa Becker in 2010, Bueno takes the viewer to a small village in Flemish Belgium. Through the idyllic pastoral surroundings, a tone of melancholy seeps in — as Bueno says, 'the oppressive feeling of living in a small rural community is never far away.' Bueno's ability to take the viewer to a location but leave us with more of an emotional understanding of a place than a literal sense of location is also a feature of her new book Haiiro." — from Sarah Bradley's post on photo-eye Blog.
