photo-eye Auctions

This week finds Eric and his family up in the Western Massachusetts countryside celebrating the July 4th holiday, plus one of those auspicious, decade-marker birthdays! But never fear: on the block this week, eleven stellar selections! Most notable among them, Dirk Alvermann's 1960 tour d'force, Algerien. Anders Petersen's Cafe Lehmitz, called by Parr and Badger one of the best photo books of the 70s, is one of the best documentaries of seedy, urban misfits ever produced. Here it's accompanied by a fantastic piece of ephemera. We've got two signed Sally Mann books, plus much more. Enjoy the Holiday Week!! |

black apple by Thatcher Hullerman Cook
"It's easy to imagine why Thatcher Hullerman Cook was drawn to the Fergana Valley of Kyrgyzstan. Having honed his photographic vision in the service of humanitarian aid groups and other non-governmental organizations, he has traveled the world in the wake of life's harsh offerings. In his first book, black apple (the second title from the young Obscura Press), Hullerman Cook creates a lyrical album that distills the elemental conditions in this detached former Soviet state." — from Karen Jenkins review of black apple by Thatcher Hullerman Cook

A Closer Look: Travelling Across the USA
" Travelling Across the USA is a small softcover of photographs taken in 1954 by Paul Gerhard Diez, a young German seminary student who had recently completed a stint at the Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan. Diez explored his host country by hitch hiking, making a circuitous ten-week trip that took him from the tip of Cape Cod to the Pacific, through Colorado and around the coast of Florida." — Sarah Bradley

Books About Cabins: Tumulus & Cabin and Woods
"Photographing worn out or abandoned and dilapidated wooden houses in the dense forest is an ideal project. The romanticism and fantasy of living in the woods can take hold at an early age and stick with someone for the rest of their life. Escape and isolation, a sense of self-reliance and sustainability all come to mind when thinking of an ideal existence as a hermit removed from the comfortable sounds and interactions most of us rely on from one another." — Antone Dolezal

Adam Bartos: Darkroom—Signed
"Darkroom charts the physical and psychic terrain of photographic printing rooms while conveying their transition from
the realm of pure functionality into historical artifact. Indirect portraits of both producer and product, Bartos' work
explores the physical space linking artist to artwork and linking the tools of the medium to the signs of their use." — the publisher
