Also on Exhibit - John Chervinsky on the Making of Tomatoes, Painting Against Wall

On Friday, July 13th 2012 photo-eye Gallery opened an exhibition of new work by Julie Blackmon. Also on exhibit, is a selection of new color works by John Chervinsky from his series "Studio Physics." An engineer working in applied physics, Chervinsky's photographic work is an investigation into the nature of time, light, space and gravity.

In honor of Chervinksky's exhibit at photo-eye he has agreed to tell us a little more about the making of one of his images - Tomatoes, Painting Against Wall, 2012.

A Closer Look — City Diary

"City Diary comes in a grey cardboard envelope, the distinctive Anders Petersen scrawl giving us title and publisher. Inside are three large paperback volumes, each 9-1/4x12-1/4, the same basic design and format as the now sold out Dear Diary, published as a small limited run exhibition catalogue for the City Diary show. The City Diary book from Steidl and Gun Gallery pulls in more of the images from this 100 image exhibit which presented over 5 years of photographs from Petersen's travels. Many of the images in this book are familiar, having been included in some of Petersen's earlier publications, but the sequencing is notable." — from Sarah Bradley's post on photo-eye Blog

Santa Fe University of Art and Design and photo-eye Gallery will co-host a performance by W.M. (Bill) Hunt on July 26 at 6pm in Tipton Hall at the Anne and John Marion Center for Photographic Arts.

Hunt will recreate his unique performance piece suggested by the text for his book, The Unseen Eye: Photographs from the Unconscious (Aperture 2011). Hunt debuted "A Life in Photographs and Other Digressions" last October when the book was launched.

Based in New York City, Hunt has been a collector since his early years as an actor. He is a frequent lecturer on collecting, a well-known dealer, a fundraiser, writer and an adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Hunt is known for his wit, his eye and his often larger than life personality.

This event is free and open to the public.

Rineke Dijkstra: A Retrospective

"Rineke Dijkstra: A Retrospective is a broad and orderly collection that underscores the artist's repetitive use of the conventions of formal portraiture across her series of photographs and video installations. And in the end, it shows this approach to be surprisingly expansive; paging through the ample reproductions, I was struck by the nuance and understated power to be found in such a uniform survey of series and forms." — from Karen Jenkins review of A Retrospective by Rineke Dijkstra

Peter Granser: Was Einem Heimat War Peter Granser: Was Einem Heimat War—Signed
Peter Granser set off in search of traces of the town of Gruorn on the Swabian Alb, which was forcibly evacuated in 1939. He documents the eventful history of a landscape that was used for over 100 years as a training ground for the armed forces. In 2005, the terrain, still strongly contaminated with projectiles and unexploded ordnance, was declared a biosphere reserve.

About the Limited Edition

Two special editions limited to 15 copies each are available. They are made up of a signed copy of the book "Was einem Heimat war" and a folder containing a signed 21 × 30 cm print of the motif "Spuren 4" or the triptych "Sighting unit / Mortar shell / Armor- piercing discarding sabot", along with a DVD of the video work.
