Santa Fe University of Art and Design and photo-eye Gallery will co-host a performance by W.M. (Bill) Hunt on July 26 at 6pm in Tipton Hall at the Anne and John Marion Center for Photographic Arts.
Hunt will recreate his unique performance piece suggested by the text for his book, The Unseen Eye: Photographs from the Unconscious (Aperture 2011). Hunt debuted "A Life in Photographs and Other Digressions" last October when the book was launched.
Based in New York City, Hunt has been a collector since his early years as an actor. He is a frequent lecturer on collecting, a well-known dealer, a fundraiser, writer and an adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Hunt is known for his wit, his eye and his often larger than life personality.
This event is free and open to the public.

Zoë Zimmerman's The Dress
"Untwined — My model arrived at my studio in tears having just ended her marriage of eight years. In the original concept for this image there was no twine or sheers but considering the circumstances and in an attempt to go with the mood of my model, I included props which could simply illustrate the moment. She is literally cutting the ties that bind. The determination on her face shows her resolve to be free." — Zoë Zimmerman

A Closer Look — Heaven or Hell
"Witkin draws on art history, philosophy, literature, religion, mythology, among other fields to build his images. Below the surface, beyond the initial and superficial shock, there are deep connections to many of the intellectual and spiritual aspects of humanity. Witkin has layered the image not only in the physical depth of the multi-dimensional tableaux, but in the personal multiple meanings of the creation and the piece's historical or cultural context. His work follows a long line of artists dealing with the intersection of religion, nudity and death in art. With his recent publication Heaven or Hell (Enfer Ou Ciel), one of three recently published on his work, the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) uses many of the prints in their collection to show the long history of these themes in the history of printmaking and how Witkin's work has directly drawn upon some these artists' works." — from Melanie McWhorter's post on photo-eye Blog

Time and Space in the Lower East Side by Brian Rose
"What defines a place? Is it the people; their faces, their clothes, their gestures and habits? Is it the buildings these people inhabit; their houses, places of work and social hangouts? Or is it a different kind, an ethical architecture? If, in the twentieth century, what moulds the fate of a place is its economic, social, political circumstances, then how can photography go about documenting such forces? Can a place really be seen?" — from Faye Robson's review of Time and Space on the Lower East Side by Brian Rose

Paul Schiek: Dead Men Dont Look Like Me
"TBW Books is pleased to release its newest publication, dead men don't look like me by Paul Schiek. The book features 20 duotone plates of men re-photographed from 1950s-era mug shots found by the artist's friend Mike Brodie in an abandoned Georgia prison. Brodie gifted the mug shots to Schiek, who then edited the original cache of hundreds down to a select few, cropped the images to remove all official documentary references while leaving stains, staple marks, tears and other signs of age, and enlarged the prints on highly reflective chromogenic paper to imbue them with personal and cultural meaning beyond their original purpose. The book is accompanied by an introduction by acclaimed critic Vince Aletti." — the publisher READ MORE
