photo-eye Book Reviews

 from She
|
Lise Sarfati's She
"Lise Sarfati's latest book, She, published by Twin Palms, is a finely crafted book of photographs for those who appreciate pictures with meanings that may not be clear on the first reading. It also features a dynamic essay by Quintin Bajac, the Chief Curator of Photography at MoMA. The essay frames the work as an anti-family album, since the photographs are made of four women, which can be interpreted in a variety of ways. The models, Sasha, Sloane (sisters), their mother Christine and her sister Gina, are shown in a variety of scenes in American West." — from Tom Leininger's review of She by Lise Sarfati

Elina Brotherus' Artist and Her Model
"After 15 years of making self-portraits, Elina Brotherus notes on the back of her new monograph, Artist and her Model: 'It's a strange feeling to look back at the work done and to look at that young person I used to be. What has happened? What has changed? The apartments, the boyfriends; the face has grown older.'" — from Colin Pantall's review of Artist and Her Model by Elina Brotherus

Takashi Homma: Mushrooms from the Forest 2011
"Photographer Takashi Homma takes us on a journey deep into densely wooded areas in search of the many different types of fungus that grow there. More the collection of a curious wanderer than a serious hobbyist, the unidentified mushrooms are photographed against sterile white backgrounds as if recently plucked from the forest floor, with soil, bark and even small creatures still attached. The fungal portraits are interspersed with images of the forest itself, as if providing a natural context - a sense of actually being there - with surroundings of lichen covered trees, dense leafage, and the natural interplay of shadow and light." —the publisher READ MORE
