Doug Rickard: A New American Picture
"Doug Rickard has learned much of what he knows of the history of photography online. With his website American Suburb X, he created his own niche archive — a sort of scholarly Pinterest where the past meets present practice in a seamless platform. Such a twenty-first century approach to image sourcing also informs his debut print publication, A New American Picture, first released by White Press/Schaden in 2010 and now reissued by Aperture. For two years, Rickard delved into the vast database of Google Maps Street View, and in a parallel journey, chose from among its imagery his own; photographing sparsely populated scenes positioned on his monitor. Considering only the rote mechanics of such a process belies their uncanny expressiveness. The diffuse edges and muted palate of pavements bordered by sun-dappled yards and billowing clouds have been likened to a watercolor aesthetic. Yet for the tech-savvy viewer, their soft focus and artfully 'flawed' look may instead conjure the luminosity of the computer screen and the increasingly ubiquitous creative filters Instagram and Hipstamatic." — from Karen Jenkin's review of A New American Picture by Doug Rickard

Kevin Kunishi: Los Restos de la Revolucion
"Despite the profound impact that the United States has had on Nicaragua, I expect that most Americans' knowledge of the Sandinista revolution begins and ends with the Iran-Contra scandal. Twenty years past, effects of that war are still visible. Having studied US foreign policy in Latin America as an undergrad, photographer Kevin Kunishi traveled to Nicaragua focusing on the remote regions that saw the heaviest fighting. He stayed there for months, visiting with people, staying in their homes and asking to be told stories of the conflict. Rothko/Sugimoto
"The new publication Rothko/Sugimoto was published in conjunction with an exhibition held at Pace London from October 4th-November 17th, 2012. The book and exhibition feature works by Mark Rothko from 1969, the year before his death, contrasted with many of Hiroshi Sugimoto's Seascapes from the 1990s. The hardbound 12 1/4 inch square exhibition catalogue begins with an essay by Richard Shiff drawing obvious visual connections between the work and their allusion or non-descriptive connections to the land and sea. Shiff connects the artists' work with something much larger than the artists-the organic, the universal, the infinite- Rothko and Sugimoto's non-self image-making, both defining the "artist" as those who can guide humanity by witnessing and archiving the world. The essay adds depth to what would already be an aesthetically rich comparative experience." — from Melanie McWhorter's review of Rothko/Sugimoto
