photo-eye Book Reviews
Viviane Sassen: In and Out of Fashion

"In and Out of Fashion has a good deal of Die Son Sien Alles' vision, but thrives on a different sustenance. It is a retrospective catalogue of Sassen's last 17 years in fashion photography that has appeared in diverse yet loosely connected fashion magazines (Purple Fashion, Pop, Dazed & Confused), all of them alt-fashion. Sassen's fashion work is alluring, extremely well composed and always a little off-putting. Her models are contorted into strange shapes or part of their bodies, often their faces, are obscured, marred by body paint, plants, and awkward body language. This creates a trademark style that is, for lack of a better term, Sassenese." — from Christopher J. Johnson's review of In and Out of Fashion by Viviane Sassen

Zoé Beausire: Rosette, Mauricette et Roby

"Zoé Beausire's disarmingly simple book about three elderly individuals — two women in the first half and a lone man in the hand-sewn volume's second half — seems, at first glance, almost entirely unfounded. Why present these people? Why was Beausire, and consequently her audience, so fixed on their studied touches, static postures, and largely inaccessible eyes? Only after seeing the two women together in a frame is it, in fact, clear that they aren't the same person. Providing no textual explanation, this inscrutable publication insists that we linger, and look closely." — from George Slade's review of Rosette, Mauricette et Roby by Zoé Beausire

Bertien van Manen: Easter and Oak Trees Bertien van Manen: Easter and Oak Trees

"Bertien van Manen's blissful images of family holidays in den Eikenhorst (literally meaning Nest of Oak Trees) from the 1970s are the subject of her latest publication, Easter and Oak Trees.

It was her son, one of the primary subjects in the series, who recently reminded van Manen of the archive. Lightness dominates these black and white images, and the obvious pleasure, family warmth and security of her children and family in the less politically correct 70s. Children pose, play and run but ultimately the photographs communicate the intimate comfort that comes with family, uninhibited in their expression and exposure to the camera. Easter and Oak Trees offers an enticing invitation to share a small part of this familial idyll." —the publisher READ MORE
