Nick Brandt's Across the Ravaged Land
Opening & Artist Reception Friday, September 27th, 5-7 pm
Exhibition runs Friday, September 27th through November 2013
photo-eye Gallery is located at 376-A Garcia Street, Santa Fe, NM 87501

photo-eye Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs by Nick Brandt. The exhibition celebrates the first release of new work by Brandt in two years and a new book, Across the Ravaged Land, published by Abrams. Across the Ravaged Land is the third and final volume in Nick Brandt's trilogy documenting the disappearing natural world and animals of East Africa. Combined with the titles of Brandt's first two books, this book reveals the title of the completed trilogy: "On This Earth, A Shadow Falls Across The Ravaged Land."

Across the Ravaged Land offers a darker vision of the world that Brandt has been photographing for the last decade, a world still filled with a stunning beauty, but now tragically tainted and quickly disappearing at the hands of man.

Book of the Week: A Pick by Klara Källström

Book of the Week: A Pick by Klara Källström
Rasen Kaigan / Album by Lieko Shiga

"Last weekend in Paris I visited Le Bal Photobook festival and I found this wonderful book by Lieko Shiga called Rasen Kaigan / Album. It is a very fascinating piece of work, like a phantasmagoria full of love and humor. A sort of light darkness seems to prevail in Shiga's world and to it, she adds hard flashes. What she shows and how she does it is very intriguing, it really triggers the imagination. This place is being created while she visits it, yet it seems like it has been there forever. She welcomes us to travel along with her here, and I have become a frequent visitor." — Klara Källström

Rasen Kaigan / Album was recently nominated for the Shortlist for Photobook of the Year on The Paris Photo/Aperture Foundation Photobook Awards 2013. Copies arriving in 2-4 weeks. Preorder a copy here.

 photo-eye Book Reviews

Roger Guaus: pes/1

"pes/1 is a highly original anthology of Catalonian photographs. Its mission: to take three photographers and put them outside of their comfort zone. All three photographers have the habit of taking close range photographs in common; intimate photographs regardless of a wide array of preferred subject matter. The anthology is made up of three separate books grouped together in a strikingly designed (though somewhat frail) package." — from Christopher Johnson's review of pes/1 by Roger Guaus, Juan Diego Valera & Daniel S. Alvarez

Edited Melissa Catanese & Ed Panar: Notes From the Foundry

"Notes From the Foundry is the latest title from Spaces Corners, a young artist-run bookstore and gallery in Pittsburg. Editors and gallery owners Melissa Catanese and Ed Panar have curated an impressive lineup of sixteen photographers for this book: Gregory Halpern, Darin Mickey, Corine Vermeulen, Andrew Borowiec, David La Spina, Suzanna Zak, Daniel Shea, Susan Lipper, Andrew Moore, John Lehr, Nicholas Gottlund, Jacob Koestler, Ross Mantle, Zoe Strauss, Sean Stewart, and Todd Hido.... The format serves as an experiment in withholding information. Everything the reader needs to know is in the photos, or at least that's the unspoken implication. It works, to an extent. With no author, date, essay, or context of any kind, I found myself studying the photos pretty hard, hoping to pry out some of their secrets." — from Christopher Johnson's review of Notes From the Foundry edited by Melissa Catanese & Ed Panar

Hester by Asger Carlsen from Morel Books
Asger Carlsen's modern grotesques are collected in his book Hester published by Morel. The black and white images walk the thin line between disturbing and fascinating, presenting the human body in nightmarish form.

 Paris Photo/Aperture Photobook Awards Shortlists

2013 Paris Photo/Aperture Photobook Awards Shortlists

"photo-eye had a wonderful, eventful trip to the New York Art Book Fair this year. We hope to share many of the treasures that we discovered while there in the next few weeks, but one great event was the announcement of the Paris Photo/Aperture 2013 Photobook Awards Shortlist. Photographer Alec Soth made the presentation of the twenty finalists First Photobook Prize and ten Photobook of the Year. The winners for both categories will be announced during Paris Photo in November. We are pleased to present the list of shortlisted titles, along with photo-eye Bookstore links, bookteases and reviews when available. Visit Aperture's site, for more info on pre-jurors and their jurors' statement.
