Book of the Week: A Pick by Elizabeth Avedon
Across the Ravaged Land by Nick Brandt

"Now in his third book, Across the Ravaged Land, [Nick] Brandt has taken his stately images to the next level, exposing a darker vision. These extraordinary photographs, shot between 2010 and 2012, are haunting. Through the series of dried and calcified animals out on a weathered and ravaged land, elephants watching protectively over an elephant skull, or lion and buffalo heads mounted on posts as trophies overlooking the Chyulu Hills of Kenya, Brandt brings us full circle back to a solemn close to his trilogy of books documenting the disappearing natural world and animals of East Africa." —Elizabeth Avedon

Featured Artist: Kurt Caviezel

"Kurt Caviezel photographs the world using publicly accessible webcams. So he does not operate like a conventional photographer — in a particular place with a camera at his eye ready to capture that 'decisive moment' in the flow of real events. Instead he sits at home at his computer, 'strolls' per mouse click through the whole internet and collects images that appear briefly on his screen before being overwritten again by subsequent images." — Martin Gasser
 photo-eye Gallery
Opening to some great feedback, Photo Objects & Small Prints is currently on view at photo-eye Gallery. The exhibition includes work from twenty-one different artists, including two jewelers, all working in the photographic medium in unique and interesting ways. Over the course of the exhibition, we are going to highlight the work of two to three artists every week. Each artist will offer some words about their piece(s) included in the show.

For this installment, we are focusing on the work of Laurie Tümer, Ernie Button and Ronald Cowie.

 photo-eye Book Reviews

Martin Bogren: Tractor Boys

"Martin Bogren shows that no matter the country, rural young men like driving fast. Bogren puts the reader in the passenger seat with a group of people on the edge of adulthood, doing burnouts in isolated rural areas in Sweden. Grey light mixes with burning tires and photographic grain to create atmospheric pictures. This is a group that is not open to strangers, let alone ones with a camera, and Bogren has broken through that barrier to document the feeling of the group. Some may find the pictures to be too blurry or too grainy. Judging the work on those technical issues is missing the larger point. These are exciting times, and there is too much energy to be contained in still photographs." — from Tom Leininger's review of Tractor Boys by Martin Bogren

Thilde Jensen: The Canaries

"Thilde Jensen's powerful and affecting book The Canaries looks at the lives of the proverbial canaries in our chemical world. Like most good projects, The Canaries begins with the personal, but expands outward and shines a light on a tragic and often misunderstood condition. In 2003, Jensen found herself crippled by Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCI) or Environmental Sickness (EI). Only after leaving New York City did she discover small enclaves of people struggling with the same condition. Forced to contend with the frailty of their sensitive and overburdened bodies, Jensen and the people in her book are overloaded and overwhelmed. Retreating to remote corners of the US, far from Wi-Fi signals and the toxic products of America's chemical life-style, they are forced to live in constant alert." — from Adam Bell's review of The Canaries by Thilde Jensen
