Book of the Week: A Pick by Rafal Milach

Book of the Week: A Pick by Rafal Milach
The Irreversible by Maciek & Agnieszka Nabrdalik

"The book The Irreversible is a physical experience. It feels uncomfortable and coarse. The sandpaper on the cover hurts your fingers. The longer you hold the book in your hands, the more disturbing it feels. This is also the case with the subject matter of The Irreversible project. Page by page you read (or rather have the impression of hearing) voices of Nazi death camp survivors. But rather than being historical accounts, the 45 stories in the book are a testimony to human experience in the extreme conditions of a concentration camp. You learn what it feels like to look straight into the eyes of your torturer after the war, how your own mother fails to recognise you on your comeback home or what dress cut you imagine to forget about the smoke coming out of the crematorium chimney. I do not feel at ease while reading the intimate testimonies, yet I feel comforted, having an impression that together with their protagonists Agnieszka and Maciek Nabrdalik found humans in situations where one would least expect it." —Rafal Milach

 photo-eye Book Reviews

Janet Russek: The Tenuous Stem

"Sunlight, this is the thread that undeniably links the five sections — Fruits and Vegetables, Flowers, Pregnancy, Dolls, and Memory — of Russek's The Tenuous Stem. For all the photographs in the collection Russek used the natural light of her home in New Mexico. It's a tenuous connection. In shading, light, and contrast these photos stand as sisters, but the linkage doesn't extend to the subject matter of the five sections of her book." — from Christopher J. Johnson's review of The Tenuous Stem by Janet Russek

Jochen Lempert: Phenotype

"Lempert's Phenotype is a retrospective collection of images, covering a period of over 20 years. The images focus closely on living forms, yet surpass being simple documentation or idle investigations into natural beauty. Instead, the images hinge on the dual capacity of photography to reveal meaningful relationships of outward and inward form. In this collection, photographs are used to their full extent as systems for organizing information into bracketed moments of evocative visual data, wherein meaning and aesthetics play equal roles." — from Nicholas Chiarella's review of Phenotype by Jochen Lempert
