Book of the Week: A Pick by Laura Moya
Growing Up in the New Age by Marjolaine Ryley

"Less of a traditional monograph and more of an intense delving into an autobiographical exploration, Growing Up in the New Age uses photography, archival snapshots, and accounts from several writers (including Ryley's parents, who separated during the author's childhood) to explore specific 'alternative' utopias in London and the South of France in the 1970s.

Both intensely personal and anthropological in tone, Ryley produces, collects and presents her findings in an initially mysterious but well-edited story. This story both questions and affirms these 'New Age' ideologies and the social and educational experiments of this time. I love both the content and creative approach used to structure the story." — Laura Moya

Photographer Kevin O'Connell discusses his exhibition Conventional Entropy currently on view at photo-eye Gallery in Santa Fe, NM.

O'Connell's photographs depict pipelines, pumps, tanks and towers used to extract energy from the natural landscape. However, the machines succumb to the natural world and the massive structures stand as monuments to entropy itself. O'Connell explores the topic of energy development and consumption and the proliferation of these machines unable to withstand the test of time.

 photo-eye Book Reviews

Betsy Karel: Conjuring Paradise

"The notion of paradise evokes images that are at once intensely personal, but more often than not generic and common. For most, they involve sunshine, warmth, beaches, palm trees, copious food and drinks, and also plenty of natural beauty — the clichés of postcards. While these dont qualify as paradise for all, the tropical locales that fit the bill often cling fervently to their status and work to uphold it with equal vigor... Betsy Karel's Conjuring Paradise looks at Waikiki, Hawaii, one such paradise, with a loving and humorous eye. Her playful images tease apart the spatial illusions of paradise and the people who stumble willingly into its embrace." — from Adam Bell's review of Conjuring Paradise by Betsy Karel

David Thomson: 82

"82 comes in two volumes and features pictures from the Second World War. The first volume, 82/1, looks at the material loss of the war, while the second looks at the human loss of the war; the humiliations and atrocities, the death, the imprisonment and the violence waiting to be unleashed. Look inside and there are the pictures. Theres nothing else apart from the pictures, except that the backs of the pictures are shown in life size at the back of the book. They are all non-professional pictures that were taken from albums or private collections. The traces of their heritages are apparent on the handwritten notes and patches of glue and paper visible in this section." — from Colin Pantall's review of 82 by David Thomson
