Book of the Week: A Pick by Aline Smithson
Conjuring Paradise by Betsy Karel

"I featured the photographs of Betsy Karel's Conjuring Paradise on Lenscratch, but when the book arrived I wasn't prepared for how much I would enjoy the physicality of Conjuring Paradise, the book. The intensely saturated photographs capturing off-kilter summer activities were created as a way to honor Ms. Karel's husband's zest for life after his passing. The unexpected turquoise plastic book cover that wraps its way around the spine and radiates a wafting fragrance of plastic beach ball (or surf mat) was a great introduction, but the discovery of solid pages of bright summer colors flanking the photographs added additional visual impact and the wow factor. It's a terrific marriage of inspired book design and photographs that capture the joy of off-the-clock endless days of summer." —Aline Smithson

 photo-eye Book Reviews

Philip-Lorca diCorcia

"Philip-Lorca diCorcia is the printed catalog for a retrospective exhibition of his work shown in Germany. The exhibition offers a view of the older work diCorcia has created, including Heads, Hustlers, A Storybook Life, Streetwork, Lucky 13, and how that has evolved into his newest works East of Eden. Additionally, the book offers a glimpse behind the curtain showing how diCorcia continues to evolve and push the idea of the photographic narrative." — from Tom Leininger's review of Philip-Lorca diCorcia

A Complete Examination of Middlesex by Bruce Gilden

"There are worse things that can happen in life than being photographed by Bruce Gilden and, by the looks of things, most of them have happened to the people of Middlesex. The bruised, the battered, the blind, the insane, they are all the subject of Gilden's lovely Leica... The faces in these pictures fill nearly all the frame, so they lose a bit of context. The faces become just lips and eyes and skin and bone. They become organic and almost animal like and in a strange way, very individual. If you get photographed by Bruce Gilden you're not going to look like everybody else. You're going to look like yourself but with a skin that is so alive with veins and pores and discoloration that it almost seems inside out." — from Colin Pantall's review of A Complete Examination of Middlesex
