Book of the Week: A Pick by Bryan Formhals

Book of the Week: A Pick by Bryan Formhals
And Every Day Was Overcast by Paul Kwiatkowski

"In May of 2012 I flew back to Minneapolis to visit my family. A few days before Paul Kwiatkowski sent me a PDF copy of his book And Everyday Was Overcast. I held off reading it until my flight because I generally don't enjoy flying and knew that I'd probably end up immersed in the book.

It turns out I was more than immersed. The book re-arranged my mental furniture to such a degree that it was one of the most thrilling experiences I've had viewing a piece of art. I knew when I finished it that Paul was a singular voice, and someone that was going to have an impact. Since that first experience, the book has been published, and received a good amount of acclaim and attention. But more importantly for me, it launched a new a collaboration with Paul. It has been a wild ride already. And Everyday Was Overcast is one of those few pieces of art that I'll never forget." —Bryan Formhals

 Interview with the Artist

Daniel Shea interviews Lucas Foglia about Frontcountry

"The jobs and lifestyles of the people I photographed inspired the narrative of the book. In the communities I visited, the two main industries were ranching and mining. What drew me to photograph was the idea that these two very different lifestyles share and depend on the same harsh terrain." — Lucas Foglia, from his interview with Daniel Shea about Frontcountry on photo-eye Blog

 photo-eye Book Review

Paula: Silent Conversations by Hendrik Kerstens

"Paula: Silent Conversations is a series of formal portraits of Paula taken by her father, Hendrik Kerstens... Nearly all the later images feature Paula photographed against a dark background with some art historical reference to tie the picture down; Jan Van Eyck, Petrus Christus and Leonardo da Vinci are three of the artists that are referred to in the introductory essay... Silent Conversations is a book in two parts then. One part is interesting from a commercial but still distant art-historical perspective, the other is interesting for its human content, for a sober, caring and very personal examination of what it is like to be a young woman growing up at the turn of the 21st century ... It feels like Paula is giving us the pictures and letting us both into her own life and the life of every young woman who ever lived. That's something very rare and very special." — from Colin Pantall's review of Paula: Silent Conversations by Hendrik Kerstens

In This Dark Wood by Elisabeth Tonnard

"How many books have you read that address the nuances of translation? How many photobooks have you read that attempt an answer to the questions raised by translation? Reviewing this book is like trying to color each side of a moebius strip... Every two-page spread in Tonnard's modest volume creates intersections between two streams of translations. One stream consists of 90 variations of a passage from Dante's Inferno; the other, 90 examples of work from a prolific San Francisco-based 'commercial street photographer' named Joseph Selle, whose archives, now housed at Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester NY, include around a million 35mm negatives." — from George Slade's review of In This Dark Wood by Elisabeth Tonnard
