Book of the Week: A Pick by Susan Burnstine
The Burn by Jane Fulton Alt

"What first began as an exploration of ecological regeneration for Jane Fulton Alt transitioned into a deeply personal journey following two pivotal events in her life; the birth of her first grandchild and her sister's diagnoses of cancer. The resulting monograph, The Burn, evolves as a poetic study of contrasting elements within the intense theater of controlled burns.

The images are undeniably beautiful, yet they are far more complex than standard landscape imagery given that physical elements of the burn emerge as a metaphor for life and death by way of smoke, which, Alt explains, 'obscures and reveals.'" —Susan Burnstine

Photographer's Showcase: Marina Edith Calvo's La Realta Surreale

photo-eye Gallery is pleased to announce a new portfolio on the Photographer's Showcase by Marina Edith Calvo, La Realta Surreale. Calvo's surreal photographs depict men and women interacting with an array of props in fascinating and perplexing ways, often collapsing depth of field and throwing off the viewers' sense of scale. I asked her to answer a few questions for us about her start in photography and what inspired her to create the two bodies of work that comprise La Realta Surreale.

 photo-eye Book Review

Away from Home by Kürsat Bayhan

"It is customary to think about exile as being a separation from one's homeland or place of birth, but exile can also occur much closer to home. Although still within one's native land, distance from your home, town or city can have an equally alienating effect and the social rifts can be just as difficult to surmount. Kursat Bayhan's Away from Home looks at the communities of migrant works who have travelled from Turkey's countryside to Istanbul. Seeking greater fortune in the city, the stories told by these images are familiar and echoed in the lives of migrant workers throughout the world. While it may be a familiar story, it's one that needs to be told often, and Bayhan reveals the lives of the largely male workers with tenderness and respect." — from Adam Bell's review of Away from Home by Kürsat Bayhan

Possession by Jason Langer

"Those who've followed Jason Langer's earlier work will find themselves in familiar territory with his recent book Possession. Many of the tropes in his first monograph Secret City surface here. Prone figures, dark alleys, mannequins, disguises, urban streetscapes, moon shots. Everything is in monochrome, then given a good shove toward the shadows to enhance the mood of foreboding and anonymity. Never mind the frontispiece with neon beer ad. The photos here are generally steeped in nostalgia and noir. Even the ones shot in daylight resemble nightscapes." — from Blake Andrews' review of Possession by Jason Langer
