Book of the Week: A Pick by Gordon MacDonald
Imaginary Club by Oliver Sieber

"The first thing that hits you about Oliver Seiber's new book Imaginary Club is the handsome scale, the weight and the feel of the publication. The second is the rich, pungent smell of printing ink rising from the beautifully printed pages. From the outset it feels (and smells) like a photobook lovers dream. Inside, the mixture of striking colour portraits of the young and the strange, and the dark monochrome photographs of street scenes and nightclub interiors, take you on a journey with Oliver to his Imaginary Club. If I were 20 years younger, I would go there every night." —Gordon MacDonald

Jamey Stillings' The Evolution of Ivanpah Solar

Jamey Stillings records the construction of Ivanpah Solar, which is now the world's largest concentrated solar thermal power plant. With the eye of an artist, Stillings photographed the landscape as it was transformed by the installation of 347,000 mirrors (173,500 heliostats) and other structures. Stillings talks about the series with photo-eye Gallery's Anne Kelly in an interview on photo-eye Blog.

photo-eye Book Review

Ad Infinitum by Kris Vervaeke

"Carefully cropped, each photograph in Ad Infinitum is an isolated memorial portrait from a single headstone in a Hong Kong cemetery. Empty most of the year, the graves are visited by relatives and loved ones on special occasions to honor the deceased. Anonymous and decontextualized, the porcelain portraits and people they depict in the book are lined up and stretch onwards as the title suggests ad infinitum. Chipped, scored and abraded, they are all exposed, year round, and show various states of decay and age. In some, the face is entirely missing." — from Adam Bell's review of Ad Infinitum by Kris Vervaeke

The Photobook: A History Vol. III by Martin Parr & Gerry Badger

"It is difficult to create a complete survey of any medium. Even a tome on the history of the photobook that covers work as early as Anna Atkin's handmade publication of cyanotypes of British algae from 1843 cannot fully document the entire photobook history. Yet, Gerry Badger and Martin Parr attempt to cover what they consider some of the most important books since the inception of photography in The Photobook: A History.... As with the previous books on books, this volume is illustrated with the cover of each featured publication and one or more page spreads, and a bit of text long enough to digest in a brief sitting, but enough to illuminate the importance of each publication." — from Melanie McWhorter's review of The Photobook: A History Vol. III by Martin Parr & Gerry Badger

Empire by Jon Tonks

"The Empire theme is apparent in the layout of the book. Maps, facts and figures are laid out with a graphic nod to an imperial tradition, but the delight of the book lies in the pictures and the stories they tell. These pictures focus on the community spirit necessary for living in some of the most isolated places in the world. So Empire is not a grim book. We don't see the loneliness, depression or confinement of distant island living, but that is not important. It's a visual treat of a book that... is a beautiful and touching depiction of places that, despite being in the middle of nowhere, still encapsulate something of what it takes to make a community (dark side not included)." — from Colin Pantall's review of Empire by Jon Tonks

Featured Artist: Bill Diodato

"I initially started this project with the idea that capitalist greed was the driving force for the breakdown and decay of this once vital facility known as Ward 81. Somehow the demise of institutional services and how it has affected society was a direct result of capitalism." —Bill Diodato

Andreas Müller-Pohle: Hong Kong Waters Andreas Müller-Pohle: Hong Kong Waters—Signed

"Hong Kong Waters is the latest project by Berlin-based media artist Andreas Müller-Pohle. Over a period of two years, he photographed the Asian megacity as seen from the perspective of the water — half below, half above the water's surface — thus creating a new, hitherto unseen image of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is known for its hyper-dense high-rise architecture, but no less characteristic of the city are its various water landscapes, including 700 kilometers of coastline, 260 islands and countless rivers, canals, reservoirs and waterfalls. Hong Kong Waters brings together these two dimensions of the city: its vertical urbanity and its horizontal alignment to the water.

Co-produced with Asia One Books, the publication features 63 photographs that form part of this unusual city portrait, which also includes videos and a soundtrack. The renowned Hong Kong art critic and curator Oscar Ho wrote the introduction." — the publisher READ MORE
