Book of the Week: A Pick by Gerry Badger

Book of the Week: A Pick by Gerry Badger
Walking by Thomas Struth

"Known for his large-scale, large-ambition history photo-paintings, in this small artist's book it is refreshing to see Struth return to photo basics — just walking around various cities with a camera taking note of details, walls, doorways, and so on. Of course, he might print them eight feet high, but this beautiful little artist's book seems the ideal place for this modest, yet satisfying body of work." —Gerry Badger

Photographer's Showcase: Michael Lange's WALD

photo-eye Gallery is pleased to announce the portfolio WALD by Michael Lange, new to the Photographer's Showcase. We sat down with Lange on his recent trip to Santa Fe to discuss his two portfolios — WALD and FLUSS (which we will publish next week) — and the beautiful, dark photographs he has been making in the thick forest along the Rhine River in Germany.

 photo-eye Book Review

The Seventh Dog By Danny Lyon

"Large-scale, monographic publications can easily overwhelm, losing readers after a few turns of the page when the vastness of what's in hand registers. This could especially be the case when examining the oeuvre of someone as prolific as Danny Lyon, who has been making pictures for the last fifty years. And yet The Seventh Dog never once feels excessive or unwieldy, despite being over 200 pages." — from Allie Haeusslein's review of The Seventh Dog By Danny Lyon

Stump By Christopher Anderson

"It's a book of faces, all of which were taken at American presidential primaries and political conventions over the previous 6 years. The pictures are, for the most part, full faces show in extreme close up, clipped nose hairs and all. They say that politics is show business for the ugly and never was that more true than in Stump." — from Colin Pantall's review of Stump By Christopher Anderson

Featured Artist: Judy Gelles

"Over the past four years I have interviewed and photographed 160 fourth grade students from a wide range of economic and cultural backgrounds around the world. I asked all of the students the same three questions: Who do you live with? What do you wish for? What do you worry about?

The combination of frontal and reverse portraits allowed for the development of both personal and universal stories. The children are presented as individuals; however, their stories speak to greater pervasive truths and problems within our society. Told in their own words, their stories touch on some of our most pressing social issues and common human experiences." —Judy Gelles
