Richard Tuschman's Hopper Meditations
Opening & Artist Reception: Friday, June 6th, 2014 from 5-7pm

photo-eye Gallery is now located at 541 S. Guadalupe Street, Santa Fe NM 87501

photo-eye Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs by Richard Tuschman, Hopper Meditations. Richard Tuschman found inspiration in the realist, mid-century paintings of Edward Hopper. Combining his interests in art history, photography, painting and assemblage, Tuschman recreated and re-imagined many of Hopper's paintings in this body of work. Tuschman's photographs depict real-life models inhabiting dollhouse-sized dioramas built by the artist. The brooding color palette and textural quality typically found in paintings help to blur the line between painting and photography — at first glance, one is not sure which medium is being employed. The subjects in Tuschman's narratives are captured in timeless moments of deep thought and reflection.

Exhibition runs through July 19th, 2014. For more information or to purchase a photograph, please email gallery@photoeye.com or call 505-988-5152 ext. 202.

Book of the Week: A Pick by Melanie McWhorter

Book of the Week: A Pick by Melanie McWhorter
Touching Strangers by Richard Renaldi

"Richard Renaldi showed me an advance copy of Touching Strangers at a book signing for his previous book Fall River Boys at Society for Photographic Education in March of this year. When presented with a book at a fair, rarely do I take the time to look through an entire book. I do a flip-through and I usually know right away if I like the book or not. With all the activity surrounding our booth, I still took the time to sit down and block out all the noise around me to look at each image in Touching Strangers. His large-format portraits engaged me with their detail and intimacy; I was so captivated with Richard's photos of complete strangers wrapped in each others arms, touching as if they had known each other for life. I looked at every individual in the shot knowing that they had just met and I tried to imagine what their relationship would be if they actually knew each other. I build my own narratives around his images and also realize that the narrative that I build speaks more about me than the people in the picture." —Melanie McWhorter

Photographer's Showcase: Michael Lange's WALD

photo-eye Gallery is pleased to announce the portfolio FLUSS by Michael Lange, new to the Photographer's Showcase. We sat down with Lange on his recent trip to Santa Fe to discuss his two portfolios — WALD (which we published last week) and FLUSS — and the beautiful, dark photographs he has been making in the thick forest along the Rhine River in Germany.

 photo-eye Book Review

The Forbidden Reel By Jonathan Saruk

"Going to the movies is a chance to escape reality for a few hours. Under the cloak of darkness the audience is transported away from the stress and strain of their daily lives. Jonathan Saruk's book, The Forbidden Reel, presents us with a look inside the movie theaters in Kabul, Afghanistan, places that provide a needed escape from the reality of war ravaged daily lives." — from Tom Leininger's review of The Forbidden Reel By Jonathan Saruk

Nudes/Human Form Newsletter Vol. 7

The fourth in Chad States' Trade series, the Trade (Winter Edition) presents an intimate collection of 25 loose photographs collected by the artist on smart phone cruising applications. Using his own pictures to trade for the images that make up this collection, States brings photographs that were intended only to be viewed privately on the glowing screen of a smart phone into the real world.

Esther Teichmann's photographs that make up Volume V of SPBH Book Club explore representations of female pleasure. Female nudes overlap and share pages with photographs of sculptures, the sea, backdrops and shells, reclaiming representation through depictions that aren't merely a factor of the Madonna-whore dichotomy, but display complexity existing in the female figure.

Synergy by Tony Bonanno includes 18 nude black & white photographs made in New Mexico's Galisteo Basin. Evoking the spirit of Edward Weston, the contours of the rock formations create a sort of visual symphony with the model's shape.

Pushing beyond his own internal limitations, Dark Memories is a new collection of nude images from Gian Paolo Barbieri. The large, beautifully printed book presents 56 duotone illustrations and occasional textual mediations on the nature of sexuality and photography. Focusing largely on the sculptural beauty of the male body, Barbieri presents a pansexual view of the human form that is unquestionably erotic and at times pornographic.

photo-eye's Nudes/Human Form Newsletter features books that explore the human form in a variety of ways. Past editions can be found here.

Gautrand's remarkable book dramatizes the poetry of destruction in images of metal, light and smoke.
