 photo-eye Gallery Opening
Richard Tuschman's Hopper Meditations
Opening & Artist Reception: Friday, June 6th, 2014 from 5-7pm

photo-eye Gallery is now located at 541 S. Guadalupe Street, Santa Fe NM 87501

photo-eye Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs by Richard Tuschman, Hopper Meditations. Richard Tuschman found inspiration in the realist, mid-century paintings of Edward Hopper. Combining his interests in art history, photography, painting and assemblage, Tuschman recreated and re-imagined many of Hopper's paintings in this body of work. Tuschman's photographs depict real-life models inhabiting dollhouse-sized dioramas built by the artist. The brooding color palette and textural quality typically found in paintings help to blur the line between painting and photography — at first glance, one is not sure which medium is being employed. The subjects in Tuschman's narratives are captured in timeless moments of deep thought and reflection.

Book of the Week: A Pick by Harvey Benge

Book of the Week: A Pick by Harvey Benge
8 Women by Collier Schorr

"In her new bookwork 8 Women, Collier Schorr has abandoned the German countryside and has moved inside the studio. What's not been lost is the fundamental landscape of desire that continues to permeate her work, where the reader inevitably questions the nature of the relationship between Schorr and her subjects. These profoundly enigmatic photographs deal with identity, power and issues of gender and sit on the edge of knowing and not knowing. Unsettlingly, the work picks at the scabs of our own past relationships." —Harvey Benge

 photo-eye Book Review

Tales from the City of Gold By Jason Larkin

"Built on the tailings and cavernous holes of a once rich gold reserve, Johannesburg has a complex relationship with the precious metal. Long since depleted, the tailings, waste and dust from decades of mining now surround the city — infiltrating every aspect of life. Although the landscape is now the site of a renewed effort to extract gold due to its increased value, the landscape has been irreparably transformed along with the lives of the people who live there. Jason Larkin's Tales from the City of Gold looks at the lasting social, racial and environmental consequences the precious metal has wrought on the city and the lives of the people who live there." — from Adam Bell's review of Tales from the City of Gold By Jason Larkin
