 photo-eye Gallery Opening
Tom Chambers Reverie
Opening & Artist Reception: Friday, July 25th, 2014 from 5-7pm
photo-eye Gallery, 541 South Guadalupe Street, Santa Fe, NM 87501

photo-eye Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs by Tom Chambers, Reverie, opening Friday. Tom Chambers modernizes Renaissance painting techniques with his camera, creating photomontages that embody the aesthetic capacity of light in the printed image. While drawing from pivotal works in the lineage of art history, from Renaissance art to the paintings of Andrew Wyeth, Chambers' photographs are inspired by dreams and reverie, presenting curious narratives that captivate the viewer and engage the imagination.

Exhibition runs through September 13th, 2014.

Book of the Week: A Pick by Matej Sitar
Anyone in Love With You (Already Knows) By Chad Moore

"Chad Moore's book is like a bite into Proust's Madeleine. A page, then the next one and I suddenly remembered. Remembered is not exactly the right word, I felt it. The lightheartedness of being young. A special feeling, the irony of it that one comes to appreciate it later, usually when it is over. You are left wondering how you could not have grabbed it and kept it for longer. But this is also the beauty of it." —Matej Sitar

Oasis Hotel By Nicolo Degiorgis

"In Oasis Hotel, Nicolo Degiorgis is... showing a Chinese history that is hidden, the history of the Chinese West. Oasis Hotel is a road trip in which Degiorgis hitchhikes through the truck stops of China's Cross-Desert Highway in Xinjiang Province. It's a road to nowhere with nowhere along the way to distract you from desert sand. It's a three-hundred mile service road for the Province's oil industry. But for all that there's nothing there, Degiorgis finds plenty to photograph; he encounters prejudice, prostitution and addiction. There are fights, fleapits and some of the nastiest toilets you'll find on the northern side of the Himalaya." — from Colin Pantall's review of Oasis Hotel by Nicolo Degiorgis

Until the Kingdom Comes By Simen Johan

"The 26 images in Until the Kingdom Comes depict a world that is both beautiful and eerie, somewhere between fantasy and fever dream. It opens with end papers that seem to be either a type of marble or crystalline structure rendered from fragments of the rainbow shimmer of gasoline on water. Clever sequencing allows the strangeness to creep in slowly... People are never present, but humanity's waste is apparent in the trash and rubble that dot the edges of some of Johan's images. Animals are depicted in landscapes where they don't naturally belong; species that don't typically cohabitate share the frame. It's clear that something is wrong; a few of the animals seem privy to some secret truth, be it the final days of a kingdom, the beginning of a new one, or the end of it all." — from Sarah Bradley's review of Until the Kingdom Comes by Simen Johan

Featured Artist: Andreas Trogisch

"I practice a 'street photography' of my own kind. On the one hand I try to never lie, which means never manipulating a scene by moving something or changing the lighting. I never even touch the things I take photographs of. On the other hand I try to remove as much of the scene's banality, every-day materiality as possible, in order to transport it into a new world — that of the picture itself. By doing this one discovers the beauty and the horror of the world even in the smallest pile of dirt. In the end it is about telling a dramatic story through patterns of light and dark, without an event ever taking place.

I observe reality, but in the end I need the picture; not to rediscover the the things that I shot, but to discover what I only suspected while shooting. In this sense my pictures are, for me, devices of insight — they do not reproduce what is visible but actually make visible for the first time." —Andreas Trogisch
