Histories of Photography: Brett Weston
Exhibition at The Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe, NM
"Brett
Weston seemed destined from birth to become one of our greatest
American photographic artists. Born in Los Angeles in 1911,
the second son of photographer Edward Weston, he had perhaps
the closest artistic relationship with his famous father of
all four of the Weston sons. In 1925, Edward removed Brett
from school and took him to Mexico where the fourteen year
old became his father's apprentice."—The
Museum of Fine Arts.
Exhibition open through April 7, 2003.

Jack
Kotz: Ms. Booth's Garden
Join us for a book signing with the photographer today,
Friday, August 2nd, from 5 to 7pm at the photo-eye bookstore
in Santa Fe. Need directions?
The
photographs in Ms. Booth's Garden are the culmination of
twenty years of work by nationally renowned photographer
Jack Kotz. They present a poignant and deeply personal look
at both a changing rural landscape and the graceful way
with which a strong and independent woman adapts her lifestyle
to those changes while accepting the new parameters of her
old age. Kotz's images are of things and ways, old and new.
There are portraits of the aged and the youthful, and landscapes
that reflect timelessness amidst change.

Created over the past five years, the metaphors portfolio
depicts women as ancient archetypes that manifest themselves
in our everyday lives. The use of selective focus gracefully
shorns the image of individual details, in effect blending
the distinct figures into "one woman." From many
to one and back again—this effect is meant to heighten
a sense of personal and emotional connection to every woman.
Rufatt's solo exhibition metaphors opens at the Bar-B
Lounge in Santa Fe tonight, Friday, August 2nd from 6 to 8
pm.

Terri
Weifenbach and John Gossage: Snake Eyes
It would be well-nigh impossible to overstate the beauty
of this book, as it would be to overstate Weifenbach’s
embrace of the beautiful in her photographs. She moves calmly
and deliberately in and among the roads, trees and flowers
of this tiny Italian town. And along comes Mr. Gossage, her
husband, her traveling companion, and her photographic antithesis.
The counter-point provided by Gossage’s rich b&w
“clues” are perfectly chosen, commenting on Weifenbach’s
rich color images, as hers discuss his. Again, one cannot
overstate the beauty and importance of a dialogue such as
this. Only 500 copies, each with an original color print tipped
onto the cover, will go fast.

Edward
Curtis: The North American Indian Complete Portfolios
This TASCHEN brick book reprint of the entire North American
Indian Portfolios is an important addition, primarily as a
reference tool, to any photography collection. Between 1907
and 1930 Edward Sheriff Curtis produced twenty sumptuous portfolios
documenting the North American Indian. Though his work began
from fear that the Native Americans were dying out, he soon
discovered a richness and vitality that had survived into
the twentieth century, persevering on the reservations. 768
pages.
