|
I took an interest in photography when I got a Kodak Brownie for my 6th birthday. Set up my first darkroom at age 13. Did freelance photography as a teen to earn spending money.

|
|
|
After college and a stint in the US Naval Air, got a job as assistant to Hollywood photographer Sid Avery, best known for portraits of stars Humphrey Bogart, James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor and Ernest Borgnine.
|
| |
|
|
|
Later, worked as a freelance photographer in the Hollywood music industry, making portraits of recording artists.
|
| |
|
|
|
Quit commercial photography in my 30s to pursue personal work after discovering I didn't like mixing photography and business.
|
| |
|
|
|
In the early '90s, chose serious portraiture as the focus of my fine art work. And in the mid '90s gravitated toward street portraiture.
|
| |
|
|
|
During 1997 and 1998 produced the "Portraits At Sam's Market" series in Joshua Tree, CA
|
| |
|
|
|
From 2006 through 2008 produced the "Faces On The Street" series in Los Angeles and San Diego.
|
| |
|
|
|
From 2009 through 2012 worked on "Black Angeles" series, a street portrait project in downtown Los Angeles, which has been honored 7 times by judges as varied as Phil Borges, Anne Lyden, Hamidah Glasgow, Aline Smithson, Reid Callanan and Julian Cox. See this portfolio at www.dicksanders.com
