Chronology

1956 Born, New York

After completing my undergraduate studies at the School of Visual Arts in 1981 I found myself in need of an income. Having no skills other than photography (and bartending) I began accepting commercial assignments from editorial and advertising clients. This launched a hectic, award-winning twenty plus year career, concentrated in food and still life photography. Working with clients and mentoring assistants is challenging, rewarding and validating. Throughout my commercial career I continue to create “personal” work; a body of work that has had exposure in international festivals and exhibits over the last ten years. Seeking a better balance between my artistic practice and my commercial endeavors I enrolled (at age fifty-five) in the Art Institute of Boston’s Low Residency MFA in Visual Arts program. This program allowed me to work one on one with artists and writers in the New York City area. I was fortunate enough to be mentored and advised by many respected artists. This opportunity allowed me to widen my community of colleagues, develop an environment for shared critical thought and pursue a more rigorous approach to my work. Drawing from influences and perspectives of my previous work I have extended my practice into new concerns and directions. While still involved in commercial work I am now able to focus more of my attention and energy towards exploring and investigating new work. As I continue in the unfolding evolution of my practice I look to the future with renewed commitment towards pursuing a practice that explores and expands the definition of photography.
