Carol Yarrow: Tender hearts and Ancient Words

The Lacandon Maya
Portfolio Introduction
These photographs were taken amongst the Maya Indians of Southern Mexico. The images bring back memories of smells such as the wet earth, copal incense, and cooking over an open fire. I can close my eyes and hear the Maya softly chanting the name of their ancestors in ceremonial incantations.

Sometimes, in the moment of taking a photograph, I experience both a quietude and a stimulation at the same time. The feeling originates in my upper chest and flows out and downward in a curlicue motion.
