Linda Connor Statement

Artist Statement
Sacred Places
Linda Connor's imagery of ancient and sacred places explores the relationship between nature, civilization and spirituality. Appropriately, her subject matter is often in spiritual centers throughout the world such as Tibet, Jerusalem, India and Turkey. She has also photographed extensively in the American Southwest.

Lick Observatory
Along with her own images, Connor has printed images from glass negatives from the Lick Observatory in California. Connor's own work has always reveled in the unexpected effects of light captured by the view camera. Shown in tandem with the Lick Observatory documents of eclipses, constellations and comets, these images of human spirituality acquire an even broader context. Connor's images are contact printed on printing-out paper in sunlight and then gold toned to achieve a rich reddish brown hue. Linda Connor has received numerous awards including NEA grants and a Guggenheim fellowship. She has taught at the San Francisco Art Institute since 1969. Her publications include On the Music of the Spheres, Visits, Luminance, Spiritual Journey, Linda Connor, and Solos.
