We at Community Photography Outreach believe photography has the power to initiate positive change in the world. Historically the global perspective recorded through the photographic image has often been limited to that of the economically advantaged. From fine art to commercial, documentary to editorial, almost every photographic image is an expression of a perspective defined by a certain socio-economic class. It is our goal at Community Photography Outreach to ensure that the perspectives of all populations-marginalized or otherwise- are represented through the photographic image, by creating greater access to equipment and materials. Thus creating a greater awareness and understanding of the issues and challenges facing society as a whole.
The goal our projects is to provide economically disadvantaged young people from local communities in San Miguel, Mexico and Santa Fe, New Mexico a chance to discover their creative potential through photography. These projects offer opportunities for local youth to participate, free of cost, in photographic workshops held in partnership with the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. These students are instructed in a positive, supportive environment that fosters the development of skills in the art of photography, and provides a medium for empowerment and self-expression.
