A superb concept: photography of more than 1000 objects not allowed to import at the airport, clear photography made during four days and nights, ordered with a cool distance, a very well designed paperback, nicely printed in full color. Another beautiful product of Steidl. After her book An American Index of Hidden and Unfamiliar which is in my opinion the greatest photobook of the last 10 years, Taryn Simon succeeded to make an intriguing follow up in her œuvre! Documentary and conceptual photography hand in hand!
An original concept by two young Dutch artists who make their own so called stereo photography by clicking at the same time, photographing the same person, object in the streets of Tokyo. More than 300 dyptics in a suburbly designed book by Kummer/Herrmann (Dutch designers). Nice size, very good printing, empty spaces varnished, good binding, smart, can be used in two ways from left to right or the other way around. Wow!
JSBJ (Je Suis une Bande de Jeunes) was formed in 2007 by artists Jérémie Egry, Aurélien Arbet, Marco Barrera and Nicolas Poillot. Dividing their time between Paris, New York and Stockholm, the collective focuses on building collaborative publications and promoting up-and-coming artists in photography online. Bruit de Fond is the second of their comprehensive group publications, this time organized around the linkages between aural and visual elements. Interesting fresh approach of photography and books, nice folded pages, well done, intriguing! Fine design!
A wonderful really nicely designed (SYB) booklet published by Kominek Gallery Berlin. 36 pages in a very simple carton cover full with piles of Polaroids which suggests a lot more images behind the upper one!
Wim van Sinderen senior curator of Fotomuseum Den Haag edited a second volume with Netherlands' most surprising photographer of the twentieth century, Gerard Petrus Fieret (1924-2009). Although the first volume feels much stronger in editing and selection, again this random publication breaths the overwhelming quality of Fierets photographs, self portraits, nudes, girls and women in the street, etc. All observed with the intense spiritual view of an autistic (sometimes paranoid) loner. In Fieret's œuvre there are no bad pictures at all. Again, randomly designed, nicely printed! Let's hope more issues will follow.
Extra-ordinary images (photographic screenprints) in a harmoniously designed book published by one of my favourite publishers JRP Ringier Verlag. This book included, all the books they publish are samples of professionalism and care. Fantastic typographers/designers who know the white space of a page.
A convincing, effective, beautifully designed (Sabine Verschuren) photobook which consists of 2 paperbacks in one folded dust jacket. Smartly done. The first issue edited by adman Erik Kessels, the second by André Thijssen himself. The photographs need to be 'read' in the context of many other images to understand the illustrative/narrative way of thinking of André Thijssen. Anyway, again a nice example of cooperation between disciplines: photography, photo-editing and design.
An extraordinary well edited book. Molinier deserves better printing and design but still the book is absolutely fabulous. More than 800 images about one of the most astonishing artists of the twentieth century. A man who was addicted to his own body and who was in love with his own legs. A great book for the library. The best 'coffee-table' book of 2010 published by Sternberg Press.
Artist book Drift by Jochen Lempert is after Fieldwork 2009, again a collectors item for your library, published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, on occasion of the exhibition of Jochen Lempert in the Museum Ludwig Köln. I always thought that his books could not be compared to his exhibitions as an experience, but I was wrong, dry design fits to dry but very sensitive photographs of the things around us become the most important!
