Here are ten books from 2009 I’m glad I can hold in my hands—viewing them on a digital reader tablet or my laptop could never supplant the intimate and meaningfully multi-sensory exchange I have with these objects. Change, in this first year of a game-shifting new presidency and (fingers crossed) a new era of American politics, needn’t happen equally in all things; let’s not hasten to retire the real-time physical pleasures of the book.

And, a shameless plug for two wonderful 2009 books by Minnesotans that can’t be on my list because I wrote for them: Home: Tom Arndt’s Minnesota (University of Minnesota Press) and the deluxe A City as Once Seen: Photographs by Stuart Klipper (The Press at Colorado College), pre-Katrina photographs of New Orleans boxed in wood salvaged from the wreckage.
