Photographs by Holly Roberts. Introduction by David Featherstone.
Friends of Photography, San Francisco, 1989. 60 pp., 30 color illustrations,, 9x11".
Drawing from the iconography of primitive cultures, particularly the Native American cultures of the Southwest, Roberts' heavily painted photographs also reflect issues of contemporary American life. Expressionist in style, Roberts' uses the underlying photograph as an emotional foil to the overall image. As haunting as they are beautiful, the resulting images reflect the response and personal interpretation of the artist to the photograph. An unusual and deeply personal series of photographs.
