Alice. Photographs by Hajime Sawatari. Tokyo, 1973. Unpaged. Quarto. First edition. Gilt lettered and patterned cloth covered boards. No dust jacket as issued. Pictorial paper covered slipcase with original printed belly band. Numerous color illustrations. Protected by glassine wrapper. Text in Japanese.
NOTE: Glassine wrapper visible in illustration; illustration shows book in its slipcase.

An extremely rare book, even more so in its first printing. Sawatari's vision of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" is truly one of the strangest, most out-there interpretations of the well-known story. Risqué in terms of its frank, nude depiction of a youthful Alice, the book's unintentionally psychedelic tone brings to mind Monty Python, Peter Greenaway, and Vogue Bambini.

Fine in a Fine slipcase; half-inch chip to rear of slipcase's paper wrapper; some wear to extremities; trace of darkening to book's spine.
