Todd Hido. Outskirts. Nazraeli Press, Tucson, 2002. ONE OF 25 DELUXE SIGNED COPIES IN HANDSOME CLOTH CUSTOM-FITTED CLAMSHELL SLIPCASE [not shown]. Large folio (18 by 14 1/4 inches). Printed boards in photo-illustrated dustjacket. Introduction by Luc Sante. Published with a chromogenic photograph, which no longer accompanies the book. Signed by Hido on the half-title page.

Todd Hido's oversized color photographs of prosaic but haunting nighttime scenes taken in the suburbs of America are simply unforgettable. This is his second book of them, following House Hunting, and it can be seen as a continuation of his first collection. Hido captures images of tract and individual houses, modest apartment buildings, low-slung commercial buildings, and empty roadsides -- all shown, as Sante writes, from the perspective of a stranger and with a tinge of the expectancy like that felt as one reads a cheap thriller. The large size of the book (the original photographs are 20 by 24 inches) further draws one into the scene by increasing the verisimilitude of the viewing experience. Sure to spawn imitators, Hido's images will make us refocus on familiar nocturnal images in our hometowns.

A fine, fresh copy; one line of raised lamination on the inner back flap of the dustjacket which occurred in manufacturing.
