Benjo (Toilet)by Geribara 5 (The Diarrhoea-Shit Reproductive Collective of 5--Nobuyoshi Araki, Yoshio Takase, Koji Yaehata, Naohosia Tabogami, Fukuo Ikeda, Tomoko Kamiguchi ('Miss Geribara'). Self-published, Tokyo, 1971. Small quarto. First edition. Stiff wrappers. Black-and-white reproductions.

Geribara 5 was an avant-garde collective formed in the wake of the dissolution of the Provoke group dissolution, and very much in the same irreverent, neo-Dada spirit. This book is the first (and probably the most coveted) of the three they published. As Parr and Badger write, "Benjo (Toilet), is one of those photobooks that startles simply by virtue of its subject-matter. It may be regarded as either a brilliant post-Duchampian exercise in neo-Dada camp, or a schoolboy scatological joke--or both. It might also be an incisive social document. The book is attributed to a single member of Geribara 5, Yoshio Takase, and is a compendium of public toilets in Tokyo. These are not, however, those estimable comfort stations visited every hour by conscientious cleaning staff, but the filthiest, fly-blown, shit-stained, stinking cess pits containing the crudest most [pornographic] graffiti, and shot in extreme Provoke style."

Near Fine+; light age darkening; trace of foxing.
