Flash Up. Photographs and text by Seiji Kurata. Zen Photo Gallery, Tokyo, 2013. 184 pp. Folio (14.25 x 10.25 in./36 x 26 cm). Edition of 750 copies. SIGNED on front endpaper. Bound in black silk with silver title and spine. Black-and-white reproductions. Gold silk slipcase with debossed title.

A stunning re-issue of the 1980 original! Writing in The Photobook: A History, Vol. I, Parr and Badger call Flash-Up one of the best debuts since Araki's in the 70s. Depicting an underworld of "yakuza, strippers, transvestites, Hell's Angels, and members of the ultra-nationalist Black Dragon Society, and ordinary punters living life on the edge for an hour or two. [Kurata] has an unerring instinct for images that suggest stories...Kurata's full-on flash style and choice of subject matter has evoked easy comparisons to Weegee, but he remains resolutely his own man and, despite that familiar walk down Shinjuku's mean streets, this remains one of Japan's best photobooks of the 1980s."

Some puckering to pastedowns (manufacturing defect); tiny scuff to spine; otherwise Fine+/Fine+.
