Matthew Genitempo's favorite book from 2018

Castaways, spray painted testimonies, and young love all bound by a deep affection for the South. A profound reminder of our own desire and the shadows we throw upon the earth and one another. They’re just pictures, but pictures we can write into our own truths.

Jenia Fridlyand’s Entrance to Our Valley was unquestionably my favorite release of the year. There’s no hook or overwrought concept, just a simple interior look into the everyday of the artist. Fridyland never takes too much, and a deep gratitude can be sensed in every single moment. From pictures to production, there is an undeniable patience and presence that can be felt throughout. It’s a book that I will cherish for a long time.

Matthew Genitempo's favorite book from 2018

I spent much of my childhood on a cattle ranch, so after only a handful of pictures from Odette England's Dairy Character, I was taken. Dairy Character is a fearless and contemplative look back at England’s experience growing up on an Australian dairy farm. She inspects the logic of controlling the land and the animals and how this predominance seeps into her own identity. I admire her freedom to move from her own pictures to family polaroids and letters from home with such gentle ease and deep-rooted intensity. Her relationship with the place is a mysterious and complicated one, but her love remains throughout.
