Stieglitz.

A Beginning Light.

Photographs by Alfred Stieglitz. Text by Katherine Hoffman.
Yale University Press, New Haven, 2004. 356 pp., 160 black-and-white and 20 color illustrations, 6½x9¾".

Hoffman presents a fascinating new perspective on Alfred Stieglitz, a man whose work as a photographer, critic and gallerist have been recorded in already exhaustive detail. This new biography, however, finds uncovered ground and looks at Stieglitz's early life and influences in depth. Hoffman contextualizes Stieglitz's travels, literary sensibilities, and interests with modernist trends taking hold in Europe and conflicting with democratic influences in America. The collision of these two forceful, ideological camps forged the later Stieglitz, whose oeuvre and tireless work is synonymous with fine art photography. This volume features photographs from Stieglitz's university years in Europe and some of his first pictures in the United States—many of them unpublished until now. The only biography, currently in print, to examine Stieglitz’s early photographic life before 1917, Stieglitz: A Beginning Light makes an important critical contribution.
