Luke Fowler
Two-Frame Films (2006-2012)
Primarily known for his video work, Luke Fowler's Two-Frame Films (2006-2012) explores the relationship between the artist and the lens. The ‘two-frame’ series began in Bamburg, Germany in 2006 when Fowler borrowed an Olympus Pen F to document his artist residency. When he developed the first roll of film he was shocked, not just by the physical appearance of the double images and their structured frames in print, but by the element of chance involved in producing the images.
Embracing the role that chance plays in the creation of the photographs, Fowler began experimenting with different film stocks, subjects and framing. The images are inextricably linked to Fowler's filmmaking as evidenced by the elements of montage, colour and reflectivity that permeate the series. The still images highlight the difference between the two mediums and their representation of time but present the same quality of complexity as his films and reveal Fowler to be as adept with the static image as he is with the moving image.
